Ganges River Delta Photo #: STS61B-50-7 Info: Technical Info - All Available Images - Lo-Resolution 109k Features: RIVER, FOREST, SEDIMENT, BAY, ESTUARY, AGRICULTURE, DELTA, COAST, SWAMP, PLAIN, MOUTHS OF THE GANGES Geographical Region: INDIA Caption: STS61B-50-0007 Mouths of the Ganges River, India and Bangladesh November 1985 South of the confluence of the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers (not shown in this photograph) and north of the Bay of Bengal lies the vast Ganges Delta plain, approximately 220 miles (350 kilometers) wide. Parts of the delta, the world’s largest, lie in both Bangladesh and the State of West Bengal, India. In this low-oblique, infrared photograph, the deep reds of healthy vegetation register the Sundarbans, an abundant mangrove swamp that is the largest remaining habitat of the Bengal tiger. The entire region is plagued almost yearly by severe storm surges and powerful low-pressure cyclones that arrive from the Bay of Bengal. Although death and destruction follow in the wake of these storms, the resilient survivors continue to cultivate crops of rice, sugar cane, and jute.

Corpus Christi - Texas Photo #: STS049-97-U Info: Technical Info - All Available Images - Lo-Resolution 119k Features: CHANNEL, BAY, ESTUARY, AGRICULTURE, URBAN AREA, COAST, ISLAND, SWAMP, AIRPORT, PLAIN, CORPUS CHRISTI Geographical Region: USA-TEXAS Caption: STS049-97-U Corpus Christi, Texas, U.S.A. May 1992 This color infrared southwest-looking, low-oblique photograph emphasizes the blue waters of Corpus Christi Bay and the city of Corpus Christi southwest of the bay. Corpus Christi, with a population of 235 000, is a major petroleum and natural gas center and a port of entry. Major industries include oil refineries, chemicals, cement, aluminum, refined zinc, smelting plants, food processing, and fishing. Tourist and recreational resorts have become a major business on North Padre Island east of the city on the Gulf of Mexico. West of the city, the Nueces River enters Nueces Bay, which, in turn, enters into Corpus Christi Bay. Southeast of the city the runways of the U.S. Naval Air Training Center are seen. West-east Interstate Highway 37 traverses Corpus Christi, crossing Laguna Madre, and terminating on North Padre Island. North-northeast of Corpus Christi Bay are Aransas and Copana Bays. Corpus Christi is subject to occasional hurricanes from the Gulf of Mexico. The last major storm to strike Corpus Christi was Hurricane Celia in 1970. (Refer to STS-026-044-038 for a natural color photograph of the Corpus Christi area.)

Irrawaddy River Delta – Burma (Myanmar) Photo #: STS61B-49-101 Info: Technical Info - All Available Images - Lo-Resolution 145k Features: RIVER, FOREST, CHANNEL, SEDIMENT, ESTUARY, MOUNTAIN, AGRICULTURE, DELTA, COAST, PENINSULA, MOUTHS OF THE IRRAWADDY, SWAMP, PLAIN Geographical Region: MYANMAR (BURMA) Caption: STS61B-49-0101 Mouths of the Irrawaddy River, Burma (Myanmar) November 1985 Infrared film helps accentuate plant growth and sediment accumulations in this near-vertical photograph of the numerous mouths of the Irrawaddy River in western Burma. The Irrawaddy Delta, one of the world’s great rice-producing regions, consists of fertile river mud and sand deposited during the last 2 million years. The southernmost extent of the low, forested Arakan Yoma Mountain Range can be seen along the western edge of the photograph. This north-south trending mountain range is usually well watered by the summer monsoons that severely impact the environments of Bangladesh and northeastern India. The deep reds indicate a healthy forest region that is wholly dependent on the summer monsoons for its major precipitation, to the extent that the area is classified as a monsoon rain forest. The deep reds at the southern end of the multichanneled delta reflect large mangrove forests. The light blues show the sediment plumes within the stream channels extending southward into the Andaman Sea.
