History of Battery An electrical battery is one or more electrochemical cells that convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy. Since the invention of the first battery (or "voltaic pile") in 1800 by Alessandro Volta, batteries have become a common power source for many household and industrial applications.

Principle of Operation A voltaic cell for demonstration purposes. In this example the two half-cells are linked by a salt bridge separator that permits the transfer of ions, but not water molecules.

Categories and Types of Batteries Batteries are classified into two broad categories, each type with advantages and disadvantages: Primary Batteries Secondary Batteries

What Sorts of Materials do Batteries Contain? Batteries contain harmful toxic materials such as nickel cadmium, mercury, alkaline, lead acid and nickel metal hydride…

Hazards of Batteries Explosion Leakage Ingestion Environmental concerns

Most cities have a hazardous waste pick-up or drop-off day Most cities have a hazardous waste pick-up or drop-off day. Even a battery that no longer works can be harmful to your health. Never put a used battery in your pocket, purses, briefcases or backpacks because they can leak or explode!

Environmental Hazards of Batteries

Environmental Hazards of Batteries Pollute the lakes and streams as the metals vaporize into the air when burned.

Environmental Hazards of Batteries Contribute to heavy metals that potentially may leach from solid waste landfills.

Environmental Hazards of Batteries Expose the environment and water to lead and acid.

Environmental Hazards of Batteries They expose the environment to lead and acid. Contain strong corrosive acids.

Environmental Hazards of Batteries In landfills, heavy metals have the potential to leach slowly into soil, groundwater or surface water.

Regulations Many states have regulations in place requiring some form of battery recycling.

What can We Do? Batteries are constantly being reformulated - check the labels Source Reduction Changes in Household Batteries Prevention of Household Battery Waste

Check to see if you already have the batteries on hand before buying more. When suited to the task buy hand operated items that function without batteries. Look for the batteries that have less mercury and heavy metals. Consider rechargeable batteries for some needs, but remember that they also contain heavy metals such as nickel-cadmium.

Rechargeable Batteries Rechargeable batteries result in a longer life span and use fewer batteries.

Where to Recycle Our Batteries? Recycling of non rechargeable batteries is becoming more commonplace, but it can still be a challenge to find a local drop-off location.
