An Informed Argument in 45 Minutes or Less Synthesis An Informed Argument in 45 Minutes or Less

Directions “Your argument should be central; the sources should support your argument.” Avoid merely summarizing sources. Attribute both direct and indirect citations.

Voice – Form an Opinion – First! Your opinion must come through in this essay. Use the sources to support and sustain your own ideas.

It is NOT the assignment. Introduction It is NOT the assignment. Do not get distracted by the introduction; use it for ideas.

Assignment Do what the prompt asks you to do. Use the stated number of sources – usually this is three or more.

Sources Evaluate the sources for relevancy and bias. Determine which side the source is on. Search for succinct cogent points you can use as you read.

Visual Make reference to the visual only if it offers specific support for YOUR argument.

Sources Use a combination of sources: some that support and at least one that opposes your argument so that you can refute it. You do not have to use all the sources. Be sure that the grader can easily recognize your citations in your essay so that you will receive credit for them all.

Focus As always it is important that your writing is clear and makes a cogent point. Your argument should be clear from the first point through the conclusion.
