Introduction Strategy is a general, not detailed plan of action, covering a long period of time, to achieve a set goal.

Corporate Level Strategy Corporate level strategy occupies the highest level of strategic decision-making Covers actions dealing with the objective of the firm, allocation of resources and coordination of strategies The nature of strategic decisions tends to be value-oriented and less concrete than decisions at the business level.

NFL Team: The Redskins Corporate Level: Owner of the Redskins Daniel Snyder Owner of Dick Clark Productions and an investor State mission objectives of the team to the GM: Make money Tells him “What” needs to be done

Brooklyn Nets Corporate Level: Owner of Brooklyn Nets Jay-Z Rapper, Entrepreneur, Sports Team Owner, Producer Mission : to make money

Business-Level Strategy Integrated and coordinated set of commitments and actions the firm uses to gain a competitive advantage by exploiting core competencies in specific product industries. So what that means is that specific products within a company can obtain adequate profit that is comparable to other companies in the same market.

Business-Level Strategy Selection of strategy at a business level involves knowing how the company will compete for customers in the industry. Preemption : This is an offensive tactic used to try to eliminate weaker competition. Since this method is under anticipatory tactics, it only works as a way to keep a company in a leading position or being a leading competitor in a certain product. Deterrence : It’s a defensive tactic that allows a company to fend itself from competitors by anticipating their moves. Attack : It is part of an engagement tactic, which means that it is the execution of a plan. A good example is war, which is where your team would invade opponent territory. Response : This is a more defensive engagement tactic as it used when fending off attacking competitors.

Example : VMware VMware sells a successful SlideRocket unit in order to increase stock share value.

The Redskins Business Level: General Manager Bruce Allen States “How” things need to be done to achieve the mission to HC Gives directives on where the Franchise needs to go: Get people to attend games

Brooklyn Nets Business Level: General manager Billy King Oversees all Basketball Operations

Fast Five Business Level: Amanda Lewis Executive Producer who manages finances and ensures people are being paid

Juventus Soccer Team Business Level: Massimo Carrera General Manager Directs and manages all soccer operations

Strategic Business Unit A Strategic Business Unit (SBU) is a major business area that operates with some autonomy. Focused towards a set of products and are responsible for every strategy to be taken for those particular products.

Example: Apple’s iTunes! iTunes doesn't just, it is a gateway to the iTunes Store where people can purchase music, purchase eBooks, and download applications. It also runs on Windows, so you don’t need to own an Apple device to use it, reaches out to different customers. Although iTunes is free, it has generated billions of dollars in revenue.

Functional-Level Strategy Functional strategy guides activates within one specific area of operation. A functional strategy is a strategy of how to implement the ideas from the corporate and business levels. This level of strategy focuses on running the business.

Example: Subway Marketing Research and Development Human Resources Accounting

The Redskins Functional Level: Head Coach Mike Shanahan Takes and makes the objectives a reality in his best way To win games needs to acquire winning players
