How to Write a Hypothesis

Carefully Read the Problem Statement Problem Statement: Does the number of hours watching television affect the reading level of a student?

Think About What is Happening and Any Supplies Which Would Be Needed Students Television Watching Habits Reading Level

Determine the Variables Independent Variable: Number of hours the student watches television. Dependent Variable: Student reading level.

Make a Prediction Choose which side of the fence you are on. I'm thinking that more television = lower reading level.

Turn Your Prediction into a Hypothesis Use the format: If (I do this) then (this will happen). If students watch more television then they will have a lower reading level.

One More Together

Carefully Read Your Problem Statement Problem Statement: Which will grow taller, a tree with 4 hours of sunlight or a tree with 8 hours of sunlight?

Think About What is Happening and Any Supplies Which Would Be Needed Trees which are in identical condition Water Soil Carbon Dioxide Sunlight

Determine the Variables Independent Variable: Amount of sunlight Dependent Variable: Height of tree

Make a Prediction Trees need sunlight, so I guess the more sunlight, the bigger the tree.

Turn Your Prediction into a Hypothesis If a tree is given 8 hours of sunlight, then it will grow taller than a tree which is only given 4 hours of sunlight.

The Steps Are: Carefully read the problem statement Think About What is Happening and Any Supplies Which Would Be Needed Determine the Independent and Dependent Variables Make a prediction Turn your prediction in a hypothesis If (I do this) then (this will happen)
