John Adams Presidency

Hello Mr. Adams John Adams becomes 2nd President (1797-1801) Federalist Party VP was Thomas Jefferson (Dem-Rep)

Challenges Adams faced (Foreign Policy) French are mad over Jay’s treaty and start to attack USA ships going to GB!!! Saw our friendship w/ GB a violation to the treaty (Franco-American alliance) HERE WE GO AGAIN!!!!

THIS TICKED AMERICANS OFF!!!! WAR!!!!! How to avoid war? Adams sent 3 men to Paris to negotiate with the French Minister Talleyrand Meet by 3 French Agents “X” “Y” and “Z” XYZ wanted a bribe of $250,000 just to meet to discuss the issues THIS TICKED AMERICANS OFF!!!! WAR!!!!!

QUASI-WAR In June 1798 USA stops trade with France and begins to attack their ships This led to the Quasi-War Undeclared war at sea b/w USA and France In Sept. 1800 the 2 countries sign the Convention of 1800 Eased tensions and ended the Quasi-War Ended the alliance b/w USA and France too.

Adams and Domestic Policy Dem-Rep. party liked France and began to write a bunch of trash about Fed. Party Federalists NO LIKE!!! So Federalist party passed 4 laws known as the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798

Alien and Sedition Acts 1798 1. had to wait 14 years before allowed USA citizen 2 and 3 allowed the Prez power to deport w/o trial any alien that seemed dangerous 4th law No one could write anything bad about the President

Can the federal gov’t tell the states what to do?

Virginia & Kentucky Resolutions Written by James Madison and Thomas Jefferson Called the A&S acts unconstitutional and the state had the right to nullify fed. Law STATE RIGHTS!!!!!!!

“Nullification” A state can “nullify” or cancel anything the fed. Gov’t passes
