Psychodynamic Evaluation

Today’s Lesson Evaluate the psychodynamic approach Plan an evaluation essay

In pairs. . . Think up as many evaluation points as you can about the psychodynamic approach Think N-NURDS

Evaluating with the Debates Using the handout on the debates, decide where the psychodynamic approach is. Need to also state whether it is a strength or a weakness and why Fill in the debates table on the back page of the debates handout.

Is it Useful? Wide variety of therapies, many shown to be effective Dream analysis, free association, psychoanalysis

Is it Scientific? Read the scientific criteria, and explain why the psychodynamic approach is not scientific

Funny, but I don’t remember ever fancying my mother . . . Is it scientific? All boys go through the Oedipus complex where they sexually desire their mothers and fear their fathers. The resolution of this complex leads to the development of the superego. Funny, but I don’t remember ever fancying my mother . . . Of course you don’t. Your ego has repressed it into your unconscious mind. Those memories are inaccessible to you. Explain why in this example, the theory of the Oedipus complex is unfalsifiable.

Evaluation Read back through all the evaluation points on this handout. Highlight in two different colours the strengths and the weaknesses. Make sure to write down a key somewhere to help you when you revise. Fill out the PEE table below which will help you answer the evaluation question.
