Peter Dennis – Dover PPM Communications TDR2000/3 & TDR2000/3P Handheld time domain reflectometers Clear guidance for cable fault location Peter Dennis – Dover PPM Communications
TDR – Time Domain Reflectometer Identify cable faults, distance to fault and length of cable. In using a TDR you are not only capable of identifying faults on the cable but also find the distance to the fault. By simply entering the cable's length or velocity factor you can find and locate cable faults up to 20km or more on compatible instruments Current Models TDR500/3 TDR1000/3 TDR1000/3P
TDR Overview TDRs locate and identify faults on metallic paired cable TDRs look for a change in impedance on the cable Cable damage, water ingress, taps and slices, flaws, etc. Used in Electrical, telephone and CATV industries. Provide information on cable status much faster than other methods A pulse of energy is transmitted down a cable When the pulse reaches the end of the cable, or a fault, part of the energy is reflected back The reflected pulse can identify the nature and location of the fault
Product Uses TDRs are typically used to find existing faults on cables but also have more applications in related areas such as: Defining and proving a cable installation Establishing a benchmark for future comparison Cable length measurement (installed and on drum) Locate and evaluate events such as splices and joints Detect and identify ingress faults such as water Detect and measure distance to cable taps Detect and isolate Load Coils on Telephone lines
Technology Well proven Long used technology Electrical, telephone and CATV industries. Increasing in use Provide information on cable status much faster than other methods. Some industry commentators suggest that a TDR will be built into many instruments in the future
