Nursing’s Social Contract Society provides the nursing profession with the authority to practice. The profession is expected to regulate itself and act responsibly. Regulation (standard setting) is through: Professional organizations: ANA: Nursing’s Social Policy Statement (2010) State boards of nursing Nevada State Board of Nursing National Council of State Boards of Nursing

Public Image of Nursing The public values nursing Gallop Poll: Nursing is the most trusted profession The public knows that nurses serve society There are gaps in public knowledge of nursing Believe that all nurses are the same Lack information on differences in educational preparation Lack knowledge of different roles & responsibilities Nurses are reluctant to promote nursing Achievements of nurses may be unknown or unrewarded Professional nursing organizations exist to close this gap

Media’s Influence Book: From Silence to Voice (Buresh & Gordon, 2006) Nurses are the most silent group of healthcare professionals Communication challenges faced by nursing profession: Not enough nurses are willing to talk about their work Portrayals of nurses often use a “virtue” vs. “knowledge” script Basic nursing work (bedside care) tends to be devalued in favor or “elite” nurse roles (administration, advanced practice, academia) Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future Raise public awareness Recruit students and faculty into nursing

Taking Action How to promote the real image of nursing Clearly introduce yourself to each patient by your name and your role Educate the public (friends & neighbors) on what nurses do Promote and speak positively about nurses and nursing Express your enthusiasm! Tell real life stories (but maintain confidentiality) Connect your work to pressing contemporary issues Reflect the nurses clinical judgment and competency

The Importance of Vocabulary Term to use: Healthcare Consult your primary healthcare provider Electronic health record Terms to avoid: Medical care Consult your doctor Electronic medical record

Optional Assignment: Develop your own Image of Nursing Using a blank paper plate or an 8” x 10” piece of cardboard. Cut out pictures and photos of nurses, as well as other images, that you believe represent positive images of nursing today. Paste your artwork onto the background, finishing it in any way you wish. Display your artwork in a study area, to motivate you to learn and grow as a nurse.
