Recap of different types. Group Therapy Recap of different types.

3 Types of Treatment (according to the IB) Biomedical Based on assumption that biological factors are involved in the psychological disorder. Individual Therapist works one on one with a client (usually use a form of Cognitive therapy) Group Therapy Group of clients meet with one or more therapists. Group of people share a similar problem and discuss together) 3 Types of Treatment (according to the IB) Read Crane – p.167-168 – Strengths and Limitations for each

Thought: people who may not hear or share when they are alone with a therapist may participate in discussion when they are surrounded by others in a similar situation. Vicarious learning - hear solutions and ideas on how to better deal with things through the group + hear success stories Group CBT

Group Interpersonal Therapy (IPT-G) Three Phases (20 Sessions) Identify a focus and work on that focus Assumption that depression is due to a focus and in order to ‘cure’ depression need to deal with that focus Done in an acute time to create pressure Group Interpersonal Therapy (IPT-G)

Group Interpersonal Therapy (IPT-G) PHASE 0 – Pregroup Individual Meeting – one on one with therapist Therapist uses various tools (DSM, Beck Depression Inventory…) to assess the depression level of patient and make them understand that it is an illness Through discussion identify a focus of the depression Complicated bereavement (someone important died) Role dispute (trouble with someone) Role transition (going through important life change) Interpersonal deficit (other… default focus) Group Interpersonal Therapy (IPT-G)

Group Interpersonal Therapy (IPT-G) PHASE 1: sessions 1-5 Learning to manage negative feelings and developing positive group norms Group members test out and refine their individual target problem area. PHASE 2: sessions 6-15 Group members work toward common goals and practice newly acquired social skills inside and outside the group Group Interpersonal Therapy (IPT-G)

Group Interpersonal Therapy (IPT-G) PHASE 3: sessions 16-20 Summarizes gains the group members have made during treatment Prepares them for the termination of the group. Group Interpersonal Therapy (IPT-G) Read Bolton et al 2007 on moodle
