Digital Scanning at the Course Materials Program Tyler Smeltekop Manager

Who We Are The MSU Course Materials Program is a one-stop shop at the MSU Library for faculty seeking to use third-party copyrighted content in their courses. Print and electronic course packs One-off permission clearance for posting content in LMS (D2L) Stable Link creation

Our Digital Work All pack files are finalized as a PDF For print packs, PDF ensures consistent printing and ease of editing Our e-packs are PDFs, acting as functional documents with bookmarks and OCR, for screenreader accessibility and keyword searching Generally, the same scanning and post-processing workflows are used for both types of packs

Challenges Faculty pull from a wide variety of sources Websites Electronic articles Textbooks Novels Spec Coll primary sources Limitations on usability of digitally-native formats Producing consistent print output from low- quality sources

Tools We Use - Scanners iVina A3 Bookedge Scanner Canon DR 2020U

Tools We Use – Software ABBYY FineReader Adobe Acrobat X Pro Quite Imposing Plus 3

Our Workflow Materials are scanned into ABBYY Bookedge scanner can be told what size the originals are (i.e. 6”x9”), will automatically rotate ABBYY can split two-up scans into one-up effortlessly Manual cleanup of stray marks
