Impact of Hands-on Science & Science Notebooks on Student Achievement Research shows that student understanding and literacy skills improve when students do hands-on minds-on science and use science notebooks to make sense of their science investigations.

You will use your notebook daily. YOU ARE A SCIENTIST! You will use your notebook daily. You will record your thoughts, ideas, observations, and notes. You will turn in your notebooks periodically (e.g. at the end of a lesson, unit or term). ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

You will put the date and page number on each page for every entry! HOW WILL THIS HAPPEN?! You will put the date and page number on each page for every entry! When needed, you will use a piece of tape, or a staple to place papers in your notebook. You will not tear out any pages. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Why Use Interactive Science Notebooks? To organize thoughts and information To develop habits of mind (good work habits) To improve critical thinking skills Through reflections Self-assessment Through expository (non-fiction) writing To see the developmental progression of an investigation Express understanding creatively

It helps the teacher… identify evidence of student learning identify students’ misconceptions collect evidence of student growth over time develop next steps for planning and teaching

Getting started - Step 1: My Name My Grade On the cover, write your name and period #. Name of class: physical science. Physical Science Notebook 15

Annette Holder 1st period

Step 2: At the top of the first 3 pages in notebook write Table of Contents. Divide each page into 6 columns. Label the columns Date, Title, page # as shown below.

Step 3: Starting with the first page on the right after the table of contents, number the first 50 pages. Numbers should be small and at the top outside corner of every page. 2 1 3 4 18

Left SIDE The LEFT side of the notebook contains information given to you by Ms. Solari. This is the ESSENTIAL information that will DEFINITELY be on a quiz or test. Nothing else should go on this side.

RIGHT SIDE INCLUDES: Warm up Your Questions Diagrams & Graphs Graphic Organizers Reflections Flip pages Applications, etc. Summaries Making Connections Warm Up: Complete the following: consumer, producer, decomposer Plants, mice, and other mammals are .

INPUT (notes from teacher) OUTPUT (reflections/interpretation) Warm up: Complete the following: consumer, producer, decomposer Plants, mice, and other mammals are .

APPENDIX Step 3: Count out the last 8 pages of your science notebook. Label each page A-P in the upper corner. You will add resources that you can use throughout the year in this section. These will help guide you through left-sided assignments. B A C D
