The Basis For Real Happiness Lessons From the Beatitudes Number One

An Introduction To The Beatitudes This series of eight poetic statements begins the single longest recorded sermon of the Savior (Matthew 5:3-10) The term “Beatitude” is a derivative of the Latin word used for “Blessed” which is translated as “Happy” or “Fortunate” (cf. 1 Corinthians 7:40) The beatitudes are appropriate for “launching” the kingdom when making three important observations

An Introduction To The Beatitudes Christ’s teachings are not intended for only “some” of His followers, but for ALL of the saints Adherence to ALL eight of the tenants is necessary for Real Happiness (not just “some”) Following Christ’s teachings result in a starkly different perspective on life (and reaction from others!) The first beatitude is the basis for the basis!

Poor In Spirit Was Exhibited PERFECTLY By Jesus Christ Humility is at the core of Christ’s teachings in this single verse, and it was certainly something He taught and modeled John 5:26-30 John 14:7-10 Philippians 2:1-8 (NASB*) Even though Jesus was God, He Himself acknowledged the need to “empty Himself” in respect of the Father Jesus’ Introductory Remarks Truly Form the Basis of All of His Teaching and Life

Humility Must Be Understood Correctly Consider the word choice of Jesus: “Poor in Spirit” Note that some have (inappropriately) attempted to teach that “poor” must be interpreted literally (in economic terms) To aid in understanding the passage, consider this definition of “SPIRIT” in this context: the attitude or assessment of self

Humility Must Be Understood Correctly The conclusion of understanding Jesus’ statement: Since Jesus emptied Himself, I must empty myself, ironically, of SELF The only way to fulFILLment is by being prepared to be filled The only way this happens is with the admission of “total helplessness” and total dependency on God

Humility Must Be Understood Correctly Jesus spent a great deal of His time with His disciples developing this concept Luke 9:46-48 Note that this is the opposite of what the Pharisees were teaching! Mark 10:28-31 Note Peter’s statement that led to Jesus’ response!!

Commanded Humility Is Naturally “Abnormal” It’s important to recognize this fact, especially given that humans place so much emphasis on conformity Consider the “natural” or “normal” way people view “Self” I must promote and celebrate myself I must be independent enough to do it myself I must rely on myself to get the job done All of these “natural” things are anti-humility

Commanded Humility Is Naturally “Abnormal” To inherit God’s kingdom, we have to admit two important facts 1 – I am helpless by myself 2 – I have an absolute need for Christ CAUTION: We must be careful not to allow this worldly mentality to creep into the church - otherwise, we are just like a denomination with no real dependence on Christ

Becoming Poorer In Spirit: Some Applications 1 – Work to incorporate poverty of spirit in personal prayer - specifically admit your insufficiency - purposefully acknowledge your worthlessness without Christ 2 – Use the complements of others as an opportunity for humility - see Matthew 5:16

Becoming Poorer In Spirit: Some Applications 3 – Read, Meditate on, and Live out key scriptures: - Isaiah 57:15 - Micah 6:8 Take special note of the lyrics to the old hymn, Rock of Ages…

Not the labors of my hands can fulfill thy law's commands; could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow, all for sin could not atone; thou must save, and thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to the cross I cling; naked, come to thee for dress; helpless, look to thee for grace; foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Savior, or I die.

It Comes From an Absolute dependence of god! Real Happiness… It Comes From an Absolute dependence of god!
