Wallace Avenue Footbridge By: Jae Kim, Stephen Lau, Aaron Curtis Hello, [introduction] Previously, we have done presentation on general aspects of Wallace Avenue Footbridge. After researching further, we’d like to tell you about the improvements that can be made on the bridge. By: Jae Kim, Stephen Lau, Aaron Curtis Tobuilt.ca 1

Contents Recap Maintenance Design Improvements and its impacts We’ll start off with the brief recap of the previous presentation, followed by the recommendation for maintenance work, and two design improvements that can be made on the Wallace Avenue Footbridge. Previously on Studio 5 •Material conditions: •Steel: rust •Concrete: cracking and rust •Wood: sturdy, but not ideal •Design decisions: •Steps: Steel frame filled with concrete. •Deck: greater than CTADG standard (over 2 meters) •Goal: to evaluate these materials and design decisions and to suggest improvements. 1st improvement: Metallic Deck Replace the wooden deck with metal Wood needs replacement often Metal lasts 3 times longer Weight is same Production cost is slightly higher Improves maintainability One of our improvements on the bridge is to replace the wooden deck with something more maintainable, like metal. According to [bridge guidelines], metallic decks are said to be three times more durable than the wooden counterpart, as well as having relative cost and weight. This means that the maintaining cost of the bridge will be reduced greatly, while the strength and durability of it remains the same. City of Toronto Archives, Series 372, 1916 5

2nd Improvement: Rails Add the extra handrail in the middle. Stairs are especially slippery (due to metal frame) Bridge is wider than 2000 mm. Improves the heavy traffic. Safer (less falling down the stairs) Improves user experience Thank you. After the inspection, we decided to improve the bridge by adding extra handrail in the middle of the staircase. Each staircase was composed of metallic frame with concrete filled in, and therefore prone to slip. I told you about the stairs bro. Technical Booklet H2006 6
