Ch 12. Nationalism

Strategy of War The strategy of the war wasn’t successful. Military was poorly trained. Tried to invade Canada. Britain’s forces beat them back

Naval Battles The Navy had more success than the Army. Ships like the USS Constitution were better gunned and had thicker sides than British ships. Oliver Hazard Perry wins on the Great Lakes

Battle of the Thames The British army retreated from Detroit and Ft. Malden. William Henry Harrison’s army defeats the British Red Coats.

Ft. McHenry Baltimore in 1814. Britain is attacking Ft. McHenry with heavy cannon fire from their navy. Francis Scott Key writes The Star-Spangled Banner

New Orleans Andrew Jackson leads an army of Pirates, Soldiers, and Frenchmen in defense of the city. Jan 8, 1815. Happened two weeks after the War of 1812 ended.

Treaty of Ghent Christmas of 1814 Armistice- agreement to stop fighting The war was essentially a draw

Hartford Convention New England is making money from the war. Met in Hartford- MA, CT, RI, NH, VT Wanted to repeal the ⅗ compromise, 1 term president and can’t have back to back presidents from the same state.

Positive Points from the war. Small use of troops. only 6,000 troops killed or wounded. Prove our willingness to fight. Nationalism on the rise.

Tariff of 1816 American industry explodes after the war. Industries wanted protection from foreign competition. 1816 Tariff- tax on 20-25% of the value of the goods imported.

The American System Proposed by Henry Clay. To create a profitable home industry. 3 main parts- Strong Bank to provide easy credit, protective tariff, Internal Improvements

James Monroe Elected in 1816. Part of the Virginia Dynasty Presided over the “Era of Good Feelings”

The Era of Good Feelings Issues happen a few years into the term. Tariff, The BUS, internal improvements, sale of public land. Sectionalism increases

The Panic of 1819 Biggest cause: Over- Speculation of land. The BUS forced western banks to foreclose on mortgages that were lent out. Banks Closed, Deflation, Unemployment.

Western States States admitted alternatively Slave & Free Internal improvements make travel easier to the east. The land is cheap

Tallmadge Amendment 1819- Missouri is applying for statehood. Tallmadge Amendment tried to pass. No more Slaves brought into MO. And provided for the emancipation of the children of slaves. The South is furious. States are split 11-11

The Missouri Compromise 1820- agreement on the slavery issue in Congress 36 Parallel was the division point. Above the parallel was free. Below was a slave state.

John Marshall desicions McCulloch v. Maryland- States can’t tax the BUS Cohens v. Virginia- Supreme Court can override decisions on federal powers made in State Supreme Courts

Other Court Cases Gibbons v Ogden- 1810 interstate commerce. Fletcher v Peck- States can’t impair contracts. Supreme Court can invalidate state laws that go against the Constitution Dartmouth College V Woodward- Charters

UK USA Relationship Anglo-American Convention: (1818) US can fish around Newfoundland. Fixes the northern part of the Louisiana Territory. Agree to co-occupy the Oregon Territory for 10 years .

General Jackson Andrew Jackson is sent to Florida to attack Indians and Spanish. Recapture runaway slaves Causes an international incident. 1819 Adams-Onis Treaty

Adams-Onis Treaty US gets all of the Florida territory Spain gets access to Texas Sets boundaries of the LA territory.

Monroe Doctrine 1823- Monroe’s State of the Union address said that Europe shouldn’t have influence in North America. Noncolonization 2) Nonintervention

Russo-American Treaty 1824- 54th Parallel for Russian Territory
