Duties of Citizenship Duties = MUSTS OF CITIZENSHIP, required to do…by law.

1. Obey the law Citizens must understand that laws are for the common good. Ex: Traffic Laws Citizens must be aware of laws that affect their activities and must follow them. Ignorance of the law is now excuse.

2. Pay taxes Government must raise money in order to provide services for the benefit of all citizens

3. Defend the Nation 18 year old men must register for the Selective Service ( the Draft) Their names are placed on a list, to be called up in case of national crisis. Should women be on that list too??

4. Serve in Court In order for the legal system to be fair, verdicts often come from a jury of our peers. People avoiding jury duty are interfering with the rights of the accused. Prospective jurors can be excused if they prove an unusual hardship

5. Attend School All of society benefits from an educated population. Society suffers from ignorance. It is the legal requirement of parents to ensure their children attend school.

Responsibilities of Citizenship These are the SHOULDS of citizenship
