Presentation transcript:

fig. 5. Anatomical examination of mossy fiber sprouting and morphology of recorded granule cells. A: section through the crest of dentate gyrus of a saline-treated control rat is shown, stained using an antibody to neuropeptide Y. Dorsal (e.g., area CA1) is to the right, and lateral (e.g., area CA3) is down. IML, inner molecular layer; GCL, granule cell layer; H, hilus. Calibration: 100 μm. B: section through the crest of the dentate gyrus at the same septotemporal level as A, but in a rat that had pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus and recurrent seizures. The sections in A and B were processed concurrently. Arrows point to an immunoreactive band in the IML that is not present in A. Arrowhead points to an immunoreactive cell on the border of the hilus and granule cell layer. Calibration: same as A. C: drawing of a neurobiotin-labeled granule cell that was recorded simultaneous to another granule cell that appeared to be connected monosynaptically. The soma, dendrites, and proximal axon are shown, as well as some of the collaterals of the axon that were present in the molecular layer. Calibration (in A): 20 μm. D: higher magnification of the boxed portion of C illustrates an axon collateral with numerous varicosities. E and F: drawings of other neurobiotin-labeled neurons in slices that were recorded simultaneously and demonstrated monosynaptic connectivity. Arrows point to the axons. Calibration (in A): 40 μm.
