Kenya Open Data Initiative Strengthening Social Service Delivery 1

2 What is Kenya Open Data? Government collects and publishes lots and lots of information, but often the data is hard to find… Infrastructure and Universal Access to Data is collected and stored in many different formats and stored in many different locations. There is need to consolidate all this information into an integrated storage location for it to be used in analytics that can aid in: Predictive modeling Planning Guided decision making Aid mapping and delivery

Open Data makes it easier to find areas that are highly affected and allows channeling of more resources This graph shows the population per county suffering from Malaria and fever. With this kind of data, we are able to channel the right kind of resources to help areas that are more affected by these diseases. This also helps identify areas that might need less concentration of medi-care but more of education, food, water etc. 3

Poverty rates per district The poverty rates per district have been able to show us what areas need more social work and projects so as to increase their economic value to the national average. This is a god example of how Open Data is enabling us make informed and guided decisions during planning as well as when advising those interested in carrying out humanitarian projects. 4 4

transparency and accountability Open Data is not only about creating efficiency… it's about increasing transparency and accountability 5

Emergency response systems are essential for any region during an emergency situation. With the road accident data, informed decisions on where to set up more social delivery services, First Aid trainings as well as being used in predictive anticipation of the next possible accident occurrence With Open Data, we are able to identify areas where emergency response systems should be concentrated and are most needed. 6

Development Fund Allocations Open Data has also been used for Constituency Development Fund Predictive allocations and accountability. This has helped send money allocations to communities that need them most. 7 7

Kenyans for Kenya Kenyans raised over $7million to help Kenyans affected by the long drought season in 2011 With data from the meteorological department, when kenyans decided to come together to help fellow kenyans affected by the long drought of 2011, mapped rainfall data was able to show what areas needed this help most; areas that were not likely to experience any rainfall soon. 8

Open Data Innovations Through Open Data Innovations, areas in resource allocations have been highlighted and this has brought to light places that are underserved hence bringing the citizens, government and CSO into action. 9

Open Data Innovation Examples Eduweb Mzalendo County Score Card Sekoo/Primo Virtual Kenya Etc Eduweb- Mapping education facilities in regards to service delivery and quality of education. Mzalendo – Mapping service delivery by Members of Parliament County Score Card – Rating various counties in terms of general service delivery, population, disease prevalence, water supply, etc Sekoo/Primo – Mapping education facilities to show the proximity of one to another, student population Virtual Kenya – a mapping solution for climate information, resources allocation, service delivery etc 10

Open Data, Creating Awareness The Open Data team has been involved in training different user groups on the potential of Open Data as a tool and resource for evidence based: Reporting Planning Decision making Development. 11
