Performance Monitoring Analysis for L3VPN draft-zheng-l3vpn-pm-analysis-00 Lianshu Zheng, Zhenbin Li (Huawei) IETF85 Nov. 2012 Atlanta

Requirement for Performance Monitoring in L3VPN ATM RNC Last Mile Access Aggregation RNC/SGW/MME RSG CSG BTS NodeB / eNB E1 Eth. IP RNC/S-GW/MME ATN UPE NPE NodeB ATM BSC STM-1 GE Access Tunnel 3G ETH VRF LTE VRF S1 Ethernet Service Aggregate Tunnel AGG SPE PWE3 L3VPN 3G ETH PW LTE S1 ETH PW L2VPN + L3VPN L3VPN is being deployed in mobile backhaul networks. Lack of visibility to performance characteristics in L3VPN, compared with PWs which could use MPLS Performance Measurements defined in RFC6374.

Challenge for L3VPN Performance Monitoring (1) Network Model: Multipoint-to-Point or Multipoint-to-Multipoint Existing MPLS PM mechanisms are applicable to P2P or P2MP. Private label itself cannot uniquely identify a specific VPN instance. Label:3000 PE3 PE1 PE2 CE1 CE2 CE3 CE4 ip vpn-instance vpn1 rd 100:1 Import target 100:1 Export target 100:1 Import target 100:1 200:1 Export target 100:1 200:1 ip vpn-instance vpn2 rd 100:2 Import target 200:1 Export target 200:1 IP: RD+12.16.2.1 Next_Hop: PE3 Label: 3000 ERT: 1OO:1 200:1 ??

Challenge for L3VPN Performance Monitoring (2) Tunnel label cannot identify a specific VPN instance either. E.g. in extranet scenario IP: RD+12.16.2.1 ip vpn-instance vpn1 rd 100:1 Import target 100:1 Export target 100:1 Next_Hop: PE3 CE1 Label: 3000 ERT: 1OO:1 200:1 CE4 PE3 PE1 Label:3000 ip vpn-instance vpn2 rd 100:2 Import target 200:1 Export target 200:1 ip vpn-instance vpn1 rd 100:1 Import target 100:1 200:1 Export target 100:1 200:1 CE2 Label:3000 Label:100 Label:3000 Label:100 Label:3000 ??

Design Considerations of L3VPN PM Introduce Point-to-Point Model Establish Point-to-Point connection between every two VRFs Essential for identifying the source of VPN traffic Compatibility with existing L3VPN MPLS OAM mechanisms should be reused Customer’s QoS experience should not be impacted PM Configuration Measurement entities and functions should be configurable
