The Cathedral of Parma

The Cathedral of Parma The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, known as the Duomo of Parma, is the most important place of worship in Parma. It is located in Cathedral Square, next to the Baptistery and the Bishop's Palace. The facade of Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral overlooks Piazza Duomo, opposite the bishop's palace . It is built in Romanesque style. The lower part is smooth, without decorations; there the three portals open. The central portal, unlike the other two, is preceded by Giambono of Bissone's porch ( 1281 ). The doors of the central portal , finely carved in relief , are the work of Luchino Bianchini ( 1491 ) . One element of the lower part of the facade decoration is the tombstone of the mathematician Blasius of Parma , carved in 1416 and located to the right of the central portal .

One of the two lions at the entrance of the Cathedral

THE BELL TOWER To the right of the facade , on Piazza Duomo, there is the bell tower, 63 meters high . It was built in Gothic style between 1284 and 1294 in place of an older tower. At the front of the bell tower you can see a big watch

THE INTERIOR The interior of the Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral is a Latin cross , with three naves of seven bays each. The structure is still that of the eleventh century Romanesque. The nave is covered with a cross vault. Between the third and the fourth bay , behind the right half column , is the pulpit ornately carved wood , by Paolo Froni (1613 ) .

THE DOME The cruise is covered by an octagonal dome, with only outdoor lanterns. The inner surface of the dome was frescoed with the Assumption of the Virgin by Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio between 1524 and 1530 approximately. The inauguration took place in 1530. In the painting we can find figures of angels and apostles. Above them, there is a thick spiral of clouds that ends in a dense tangle of angels, saints and patriarchs, arranged on several concentric circles. In the middle, it is recognizable the Madonna flanked by Adam, Eve and St. Joseph. At the center of the fresco, a large yellow light is depicted as a symbol of God's presence.

PRESBYTERY The high altar, mounted on a base formed by two steps bronze on which are inscribed passages of the Gospel in various languages. The four sides are decorated with bas- reliefs; on the front and back sides, ten of the twelve Apostles. On the left side we can see the Redeemer blessing, flanked by the symbols of the four Evangelists .
