Thank you for the opportunity to demonstrate some of the improvements we’ve added to the ASSIST website and to introduce you to some of the newer applications that make use of ASSIST data. I’ll cover some key points of each application, interspersed with a live demo to illustrate how to navigate each site to find the information you need.

ASSISTdocs is similar to Quick Search in that you do not need to register to use it, and because it only provided access to unrestricted documents. Modeled after the Google search engine site, ASSISTdocs was developed to improve customer access to DSP documents. It loads quickly, and returns results very fast. Since it is hosted on several servers managed by a commercial Internet Service Provider, ASSISTdocs is available even when the other ASSIST applications are down for maintenance. Plus, since it is not behind a DoD firewall, all commercial customers should be able to access the site. ASSISTdocs offers a couple of features that Quick Search does not. First is the ability to do full-text searches of the document data base. This can be a very useful feature. Also, ASSISTdocs lets you filter the results by document status. Click on Document ID label to see Help and examples. Then search for [MIL-C-51] Point out all of the docs returned. Point out how to navigate the results list. Later, contrast this with the way ASSISTdocs displays results. Mention that Quick Search was completed first and is not as refined as ASSISTdocs.com. Next do a similar demo of the Document Number search. Search for 1361 and point out how Quick Search found the NASTHRU documents. Search [Title] for [asbestos] to show that it will also find a title with “Non-Asbestos”. Search for FSC 3020 to demonstrate how the screen changes to allow for FSC searching. Demo how to select a range of FSCs or STDZ Areas by holding down the control key. Use example of Mass Finishing Job Shop Association (i.e., how to track canceled MILSPECs to the ASTM document that replaced them). NOTE: enter (s/s by ASTM http://assistdocs.com

When all you is a DSP document or to verify that the specification or standard you have is current, you can use this application. No pre-registration is required. Although you’ll have access to metadata on all indexed documents, only unrestricted documents may be downloaded from this site. Note that you can search in a variety of ways. ASSIST-Online “Benefits of Registration” Lets all users create customized Alerts Provides access to key points of contact Allows all users to view and comment on draft documents in coordination Only way to access report features in the Qualified Products Database (QPD) Lets users customize reports and export most data to a spreadsheet or PDF file This is the primary ASSIST application. Besides offering some powerful additional features to all registered users (DoD, other Federal employees, and commercial customers), ASSIST-Online is the portal by which the DoD standardization management activities access modules that allow them to manage assigned specifications, standards, qualification data, and other DSP documents. Included are modules that enable SMA personnel to request project numbers and manage projects; request new document numbers; submit documents for indexing into ASSIST; manage overage documents and request automatic validation notices; and, soon, coordinate draft documents. A powerful tool that all users may access is the ASSIST Alerts. This lets a user customize his or her profile to receive automatic email notifications of changes to documents of interest. Users may track published changes, new drafts, or even new projects against documents of interest. Users may even select entire FSCs or Standardization Areas to monitor.
