About Me! This is my 20th year of teaching! (18th in Alden) I have been married for 13 years I have a 4th grader and a 2nd grader

English Language Arts Journeys by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Esperanza Rising, by Pam Munoz Ryan Look for weekly Reading Selection Tests (Vocabulary and Comprehension) 5 Unit/Interim Tests Spelling Pretests (Thursdays) and Final Tests (given on Fridays) Spelling Sentences (handwritten or typed) due on Thursdays NYS ELA Assessment is given April 12-13, 2018

Math Math In Focus, by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Follows the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) Homework often out of the workbook Textbooks available online to help with homework at home Quizzes are given almost weekly Chapter tests will be given at the end of each chapter. There will be plenty of notice to study and a review before each test! NYS Math Assessment given May 1-2, 2018

AIS Support Push in math support by Mr. Schall from 9:45-10:15 daily which allows small group math instruction for part of class Pull out math support daily from 10:45-11:05 to support: Fact fluency Problem solving Skill building Daily 11:05 – 11:45 to support: Reading Comprehension Reading Fluency Writing

Science Project based as much as possible Science Learning Standards, topics include: Structure and properties of matter Matter and energy in organisms and ecosystems Earth’s systems Space systems: Stars and the Solar System ESP Rocketry Kit Students build a rocket and use it to study motion, energy, acceleration, and elevation

Social Studies Project based as much as possible Review of Continents, Oceans, and 50 states Inquiry based learning on the following topics: Slavery Complex Societies New France The Declaration of Independence Bananas Puerto Rico Alden Historical Society visit

Homework Homework is usually given daily, but shouldn’t take longer than 50 minutes Practice of what is taught in class Math textbook should be used to help with math homework Assignments written in agenda daily Students should also be reading nightly to prepare for monthly book report projects

Grading Power School, 3 report cards this year Science/Social Students (2nd and 3rd terms only) 50% projects/HW 50% labs/quizzes ELA – 40% reading comprehension 40% writing 20% weekly spelling tests Math – 33% quizzes 33% tests 33% homework

Expectations Students should be able to complete most homework assignments independently Students should be packing their own bags, remembering PE clothes and band instruments Students are expected to give their best effort and ask for help when needed Students record their homework and any other information in their agendas daily Students are responsible for asking a parent/guardian to initial their agenda a couple times each week (or as often as needed to keep up with work)

Tidbits… Our lunch time is at 11:50-12:20, so please send in a healthy snack to help your child get through the afternoon. Water bottles encouraged daily We will celebrate students’ birthdays, and nut free and strawberry free treats are welcome! Scholastic Book Orders are given out monthly and help us to earn free books
