Popping corn!

Why does popcorn pop?

What you will be doing today: Designing your own experiment to find out why popcorn pops Discovering which has a greater mass, popped or unpopped popcorn kernels

Safety Directions Put on safety goggles! Put long hair up and remove dangling jewelry or baggy jackets. Do NOT play with the burner ALWAYS use the hot mits when picking up heated glassware.

Lab directions Look at your data sheet, decide AS A GROUP, what steps are needed to find the answers

Step 1 Decide how many kernels to use (Max=25) Measure the mass of your beaker, oil, and kernels (small amount of oil, just enough to cover the bottom)

How will you find the mass of each of these? How do you find the mass of the only the oil? What about the container you are measuring it in? What units will we use?

Step two Beaker should have kernels and thin layer of oil at bottom. Place beaker on center of burner.

Step 3 Turn burner on medium heat Do not put your face or hands near he burner or beaker

Step 4 Wait of Popcorn to pop! DO NOT try to put popped popcorn back in the beaker if it pops out

Step 5 When all popcorn has popped, or when it begins to burn turn burner off Use heat mit to remove the beaker from the burner Place beaker on lab table and do not touch.

Step 6 After beaker and popcorn have cooled put any popcorn that popped out back into the beaker Find the new mass How will you find the mass of just the popcorn?
