Presentation transcript:

You all have a quiz sheet and a SWAN sticker You all have a quiz sheet and a SWAN sticker. Stick the quiz in your book with the SWAN sticker below. Complete the quiz, then hand your book to a peer to SWAN mark. A prize for the winner from your pair. Team PE

Identify the four types of guidance that impact sports performance (2-4) Evaluate and apply the use of the four types of guidance, using appropriate examples (5-6) Choose and Justify which types of guidance are appropriate for beginners and elite performers (7-8)

C/W 3.2.1 Sports Psychology Guidance 05/07/17 3.2.1 Sports Psychology Guidance Starter (Pairs): Suggest ways in which you are given guidance to improve or learn (use the pictures below)

Types of Guidance Guidance – A method to convey information to a performer. Guidance methods: Visual (Seeing) Verbal (Hearing) Manual (Assist movement – physical) Mechanical (Use of objects/aids)

Mechanical Guidance – Using a mechanical aids to assist a performer In pairs: Can you think of different types of mechanical guidance in sport? Examples: Use of arm bands (Swimming) Use of trampoline harness CAN YOU THINK OF ANYMORE? Advantages Disadvantages Good for potentially dangerous skills Allow a performer to gain a feel for a movement without fear Good for building confidence and feeling safe (beginner) Equipment needed may be expensive Performer can come to rely on the aid

Visual Guidance – Performer can see something In pairs: Can you think of different types of visual guidance in sport? Examples: Demonstration of technique Footage of performance (DVD, Youtube, Analysis Software (Elite Performers)) Photographs/Posters CAN YOU THINK OF ANYMORE? Advantages Disadvantages Useful for all levels of performers Especially good for young/inexperience/beginner performers Allows performers to see what is required Specific aspect of skill can be observed Performers can copy skill Demonstration must be of good quality Some skills too complex to demonstrate Performers must be fully engaged

Verbal Guidance – It is provided by another person speaking to you In pairs: Can you think of different types of verbal guidance in sport? Examples: A coach/teacher talking to performer, highlighting technique (how to perform) A coach/teacher highlighting ‘trigger points’ e.g. Get in to shape, point your toes CAN YOU THINK OF ANYMORE? Advantages Disadvantages Useful for higher-level performers (Elite) Good way of highlighting key teaching points Sharing basic information and instructions Questioning – make performer think Result in information overload Can be boring Sport Stadiums noisy, make it hard to get information across Complex things are often difficult to explain verbally.

Manual Guidance – Physically moving the performer In pairs: Can you think of different types of manual guidance in sport? Examples: Physically guiding the performer, moving performer arm to ensure correct motion of forehand drive. Supporting the performer for safety, so that the required movement takes place, e.g. supporting a gymnast whilst trying to do a vault CAN YOU THINK OF ANYMORE? Advantages Disadvantages Good for complete beginners Allows the performer to develop the correct feel A movement can feel different when someone else is moving your body for you A performer may not think they are actually performing the skill themself

BEGINNER ELITE   Need visual guidance to understand what a skill looks like Unlikely to need visual guidance other than to highlight minor faults, for example use of slow motion Also need verbal guidance but it should not be too long or complex Will need verbal guidance. Likely to be longer and more complex than that given to a beginner. Fine-tuning technique Likely to need manual/mechanical guidance to support or guide through the correct technique.  Elite performers are unlikely to need manual/mechanical guidance unless there is an unexpected flaw in technique.

Exam Question For a beginner in the sport of basketball, how might visual, verbal and manual/mechanical guidance be provided? (3 marks) Mark Scheme Visual – Coach demonstration or video/DVD Verbal – Coach Feedback, Parent or Peer Manual/Mechanical – Coach guiding the player’s arm through the movement of e.g. shot

Learning Objectives Know the four types of guidance that impact sport performance (4-5) Be able to evaluate and apply the use of the four types of guidance, using appropriate examples (6-7) Be able to choose and justify which types of guidance are appropriate for beginners and elite performers (8-9)

Apply it! You all have a selection of performers on your desk. Chose one. Describe how a performer may use each method of guidance Apply the methods of guidance to your performer, evaluate which methods of guidance will be more suitable for your performer. Use the pictures on your sheet to justify which methods of guidance are better suited to a beginnger and an elite athlete.

Each table will select one person to take up the hot seat. You need to prepare 5 difficult questions from todays lesson, then another 5 lessons from any other topic this year.
