PowerPoint Day 1 Credibility Builder This is a “You’ve barely used it” class, so if you’ve used it before stay tuned for advanced tricks

Introduction to PowerPoint 2013 We’ve all been part of bad powerpoints and good powerpoints. We’ve all had frustrations trying to use PPT Today we’re going to make it amazing and easy to use. Been using it for 15 years How many of you are taking slides from other people’s PPTs, how many of you are copying and pasting and running into problems. This is a “you’ve never seen it before class”, but if you’ve used it, keep your ears open for advanced tricks as we go We’ve all had frustrations trying to use PPT We’ve all seen BAD PPTs Today we’re going to learn how to make it easy, and amazing. How many of you have to copy and paste from other presentations?

BAD POWERPOINTs We’ve all seen BAD PowerPoints right?

Ctrl N Ctrl M Handy Shortcuts New Presentation One More Slide Creating New Presentations

Layouts Don’t Move Content Boxes Choose the Layout you need!

Slide Dimensions vs. Standard Widescreen

Inserting and formatting text Themes for our storyline PowerPoint Tips from Psych class (you’re lucky!) How many bullets can you have? Difference in Text sizes, Big vs. Small What’s the right size for text? 32 pt absorbtion Each slide is a note for today’s course Priority should be on text at the top Larger is more important Need to be noticeable Show examples by duplicating slides, and making the title way bigger on one 20pt is unreadable by at least someone in the room 36 is absorption Align to Left, line up text

Adding bulleted lists Adding bullets Have them add the font size bullets we just mentioned Managing bullets (making them look different) Make sure that the bullets you’ve chosen tells the right story, i.e. has to do with your topic Numbered vs. Bullets Text alignment and paragraph spacing to group topics and details about those topics No more than 4 bullet points Most things that are sub-bulleted are things that can be said out loud (move to speaker notes)

Appropriate Bullets This is a list Of Things About Something First This Then This And Finally This Finished This Completed This Accomplished This These are silly And have no purpose So let’s avoid them

Adding text boxes Adding text boxes as callouts Adding text boxes to show the number that’s important on a chart

Advanced Text Formatting Word Art

Format Painter Use it on a formatted text box You can double-click on it, to make it persist Also talk about the Reset button in case you’ve done too much F4 will also re-do the last action, Change a word to red Click on another word and click F4

Overview of the various PowerPoint views Advantages of the different views Slide Sorter – Copy, Paste and Reorder other people’s PPTs This section was previously at the beginning of the module. Sections – easy to see how many slides are in each portion of your presentation If multiple presenters are using the same deck, and you want to re-arrange presenters, you can easily move a whole section around. Visualize portions of PPT and transitions, segregates like in a movie

Running the Slideshow

Module 2

Graphic Design with Basic Shapes Create a Circle that highlights something we need to look at on this slide. Or a box that we need to put on a slide Arrows to point to something Changing angles with the yellow anchors Edit points Put a wide rectangle at the bottom, to create a floor Put shapes behind text that you want to stand out (rectangle that goes all the way across the slide Put in an arrow to point out an item that’s important Let them play

Working with Colors Shape Styles Save as Default Shape Choose No Fill, then set as default shape, then you can make all kinds of outlining shaped Gradients, if time

Grouping and ungrouping objects Draw a picture, and group it together Hand done diagram, group it together like a hand done smart art Then when we talk about smart art, people like it better

Layering (reordering) objects Selection Pane Show an example of when it would be helpful

Instructor Topics Only - Merging shapes Show how merging options can give you the shape you want, if that shape isn’t available.

Inserting & editing pictures from a file PPT Psych throw-ins People (we empathize with people) No Background Slid part-way off the screen (sparks imagination) Use Google and Bing to find images that are labelled for re-use “creative commons” Never use clip art!!! Crop and remove background Create Space (don’t jam pictures right up on text)

Inserting Screenshots Then put a picture Style on it, it’ll make it look better

Adding slide transitions Fade Fade through black for content transitions

Introduction to animating to text and objects Show animations to smart art objects (effect objects, “one by one”)

Running a slideshow

Adding speaker notes Creating Handouts with Notes from the backstage view You can change the size of speaker notes (not in the computer view, but when you print them out they’ll be bigger)

Using wide screen versus standard size slides

Printing slides, speaker notes and handouts
