Pride and Prejudice Revision Extract 2 Chapter 56 extract Theme – social class Tuesday 2 May (period 4)

Contextualise the extract concisely Starting with the extract, write about how Austen presents the upper classes. Write about: *how Austen presents the upper classes in this extract *how Austen presents the upper classes in the novel as a whole. Contextualise the extract concisely State Austen’s intention and novel’s genre/style (satirical/comedy of manners/romance) Towards the novel’s resolution/final section of the tripartite structure. Lady Catherine visits the Bennets at Longbourn to voice a warning to Elizabeth and attempt to extort a promise that she will never accept a proposal from her nephew Darcy.

The extract It is essential to make maximum use of the extract – top band skills for AO1/2/3. Analyse/explore/argue/show understanding of both how Austen has written and why...(intention). Use the question to shape your argument and signpost with topic sentences (Austen presents the upper classes...Characterisation of Lady Catherine....Lizzie’s refusal highlights.....A modern reader’s opinion of the upper classes may differ.....The embedded status of the upper classes....The values of Regency England ......) SQI ...pepper...use subject terminology exclamative/imperative/irony/adjectives/listing/ rhetorical/repetition/direct speech/turn taking/connotations/mirroring

The rest of the novel Other examples of Austen’s presentation of upper classes...could be similar attitudes/could also counter.../stop and think before you carry on..It is sophistication of your response rather than number of quotes remembered that get the high marks. AO1/2/3

Some ‘class’ quotes that could work Some ‘class’ quotes that could work.. Have a look for the AO2/3 and way to show an explorative argument (Charlotte about Darcy) “with family, fortune, everything in his favour....he has every right to be proud” (Caroline Bingley about Jane) “..wish to be well settled.....with such a father and mother and such low connections, I am afraid there is no chance..” (exposition/Mrs Bennet) “large fortune” “what a fine thing for our girls” (her focus is on money as opposed to ‘class’....) Counter...(Bingley) “If they had uncles enough to fill all of Cheapside it would make them no less agreeable”

Ending your essay Concise concluding statement Connect the question focus to Austen’s intention and reader response Austen has not just successfully portrayed the established hierarchy embedded in Regency England, but through the witty, satirical and raw honesty of her narrative she has enabled readers across time to appreciate the shallow hypocrisy of the upper classes and the irony of their “good breeding” alongside the strong, feminist voice of her heroine and mouthpiece Elizabeth and her intelligent understanding of class prejudice.
