FUTURE FITNESS How the Wood Road Physical Education Staff Uses Technology Proudly presented by: Rob Immel, Anne Cornell, and Kevin Dayton

Why Technology? Bridge the gap between faculty and students It is what the students want to do It is what the students are already doing Most importantly……IT’S FUN!

Future Technology in the PE program will shine some positive light on your program and show that there really is teaching going on. It is a great way to get rid of those stereotypes of just rolling out the ball. Technology will give you the opportunity to reach a greater number of students in your classes. Not just the athletes.

Technology New technological activities promote healthy lifestyles without limiting assessment to skill related components. Students attention out of school is very technologically driven and focused, this is a great way to bring their everyday life into the gymnasium.

Physical Education Bring your physical education program to the top of its game using some of today’s greatest technology innovations and get noticed for all of your hard work and dedication.

Out with the old…..

…..in with the new

Nintendo Wii The hottest game console on the market. The Nintendo Wii is an interactive game that elevates heart rate, improves flexibility and range of motion, and even improves muscular endurance.

Wii The Wii is not only being used in schools; but also physical rehab centers and nursing homes Some are successfully using the Wii games as their daily exercise in an attempt to lose excess weight

Wood Road’s use of the Wii As a station for certain units; students get a set amount of time playing the Wii As a reward for behavior (by PE teacher, principal, or classroom teacher. As a supplemental activity for students with a medical excuse (approved by school nurse) Adapted physical education lessons Faculty challenges to create a sense of community in the school and bring awareness to the PE program

Dance Dance Revolution This arcade-game craze is the most popular dance game. Players move their bodies and step on the appropriate directions to gain points and complete the dances.

DDR The game can be played on a variety of levels and speeds It can be played by many players at a time on the dance mats or even practiced with poly spots by an entire class.

Wood Road’s use of the DDR As a station for certain units Medically excused students Adapted physical education Rewards for Behavior Student’s choice day

Game Bikes The stationary bike that puts you “into” the video game. Straight out of the arcade into the gymnasium.

Game Bikes Game bikes hook up to the game system and the television. You need to pedal and steer to control the game. i.e.; to make the ATV go faster and turn left the student must pedal faster and turn the handlebars to the left.

Wood Road’s use of the Bikes Student’s choice day Timed station for certain units Medically excused students Rewards for students Adapted physical education classes

Pulse meters Pulse stick is freestanding in the gymnasium. Student places both hands onto the meter and in seconds it reads an accurate heart rate. Students inform the teacher if they are in the healthy heart zone.

How Wood Road uses Pulse Meters Brought out into the gym for students to check their heart rate at different times throughout the lesson. Used as a checkpoint in some lessons Used to show the difference in intensity levels in of different activities. Used as a reference for the student’s healthy heart zone.

Pedometers Step counters Did you get your 10,000 steps today? Very popular, and easy to use. They were even offered in cereal boxes and happy meals as prizes.

Wood Road’s use for Pedometers Monthly move challenges: 6 minute run/walk with pedometer on for certificate (reindeer run, shamrock shimmy, pumpkin prance, etc.) Classes use them to measure and graph steps.

Internet and Video So much helpful information that is available for free on the internet.

Wood Road’s use for Internet Show movie clips of the lesson we are teaching. Give useful websites for independent student research Student use for interactive learning of a concept or activity (heart cycle)

How can we do that? Wood Road purchased the game bikes and the Nintendo Wii through their budget. Once we got the Fitness Room together students and faculty donated games and game systems. Student council and other school groups donated money to improve the Fitness Room.

Other Ideas Webquests-Teacher made student directed internet research activities: Student receives teacher recommended websites and needs to complete an activity using those sites and resources Great idea for a student who is medically excused or home-schooled.

Ideas Stereo- CD player loud enough to be heard throughout the gym during activity A thing small enough as music can add great things to your lesson. Can be used as start and stop for an activity A great way to motivate by playing popular music for warm-ups. Use different tempos for different types of movement.

Ideas Digital Camera-Your own personal camera or one borrowed from the district. Students love their picture taken and it can even motivate participation Place student pictures on a computer as a slideshow where students can see their own work. Use student pictures or video clips to show proper form or movement to other classes.

Technology “I’ve been involved with teaching and coaching now for 53 years. What worked than, works now! I don’t need those funny looking gadgets in my class” -Coach Stewart Padasso BSCSD substitute !!!!! Don’t be a Stewart Padasso !!!!!
