Exploration of Artist Media Ninth Grade Curriculum Written by: Patricia Faillace

Objective: In this class, students will enhance their art knowledge by exploring the numerous facets of art, as they experience and experiment with a variety of media. Experimenting by testing different art media and art activities will benefit the students by strengthening neural pathways that produce growth in the areas of creativity, imagination, sensory integration and fine motor skills. Every different medium requires students to change their thought process, engaging their problem-solving skills. The development of this skill will benefit students in all areas of education. Ninth grade students will attend this class five days a week for 45 minute sessions.

Week 1 and 2 Theme: Georgia O’Keeffe inspired Botanical Charcoal Drawings Essential Question: Can you enhance details by blending rich blacks with subtle tonal values? Resources: Pencils, charcoal, white paper Skills: Learn to experiment with a versatile medium such as charcoal by using various tonal values. Activity: Choose a botanical object and produce a detailed drawing using pencil and charcoal. Week 3 Theme: Floral Arrangement Still Life in Pastels Essential Question: How many colors and shades can be created by blending? Resources: Color pastels, paper, fixative, synthetic flowers Skills: Develop skills in observational drawing and learn how to recognize the tone or value of a color. Activities: Use pastels to create value scales. Create rendering of flower/flowers by blending pastel colors onto white paper. Week 4 Theme: National Geographic Acrylic Paintings Essential Question: How can acrylic paint be manipulated to create 3- dimensional illusion? Resources: Canvas board, pencils, acrylic paint, brushes, National Geographic magazines Skills: Recognize and understand the illusions which are created by the interaction of hue, contrast, value and saturation. Learn to use perspective to enhance the 3D illusion. Learn about painter, Henri Rousseau and his imaginative, jungle landscapes. Activity: Choose a picture from National Geographic magazine and create a 3- dimensional acrylic painting with the use of perspective, spatiality and color contrast. Week 5 and 6 Theme: Water Color Chinese Lanterns Essential Question: How can we create ornamental objects by applying intricate details? Resources: Rice paper, watercolors, brushes, string Skills: Understand the cultural artistic style used in China. Learn to create ornate objects with the use of meticulous detail. Activity: Create an ornamental Chinese Lantern using delicate watercolor brush strokes on rice paper. Resources: Bars of soap, carving tools Skills: Learn about a metaphor as a figure of speech and create a sculpture which is representative or symbolic of oneself. Week 13, 14, 15 Theme: Whimsical Tea Pots Essential Question: How can we manipulate clay to create a functional pot with a whimsical design? Activity: Create a whimsical clay figure which is functional as a tea pot. Week 30, 31, 32 Theme: Block Printing with Styrofoam Essential Question: How can items, which are a part of our daily lives be used for or printmaking? Resources: Styrofoam trays, pencils, brayer, printmaking ink Skills: Learn to use ordinary objects in extraordinary ways, which will enhance imagination. Activity: Cut off rounded and raised edges of styrofoam trays and draw design of choice with pencil, pressing firmly. Use for printmaking. Weeks 33, 34, 35 Theme: Oil Painting- Self-Portrait Essential Question: How can we express our sense of self and depict our own sense of the world? What can we learn about the artist as a person when observing their self-portraits? Resources: Canvas board, oil paint, brushes, paint thinner, linseed oil, charcoal Skills: Students will learn the process of preparing their palettes, and the proper method of using oil paint, cleaning of oil paint and brushes. Research and discuss Expressionism. Activity: Paint an Expressionistic self- portrait using oil paint on canvas board.
