Presentation transcript:

How Plants Grow The Four Basic Needs Plants grow almost everywhere on Earth. Plants come in many sizes. Some are tall, like oak trees. Others are smaller, like rosebushes. The Four Basic Needs

Basic Needs Sun Air Water Soil But each plant has the same basic needs. These needs must be met in order for the plant to live and grow.

Plants need light. The sun provides plants with light. Provide plant that is covered. What do you think will happen to this plant? How long do you think it will be before it suffers from the lack of light?

Oxygen is the air we breathe. Plants need oxygen. Oxygen is the air we breathe. Put vaseline on plant’s leaves. Can this plant “breathe”? What do you think will happen to this plant? How long do you think it will take before the plant dies from lack of oxygen?

Plants need water. Plants get water from rain or other natural resources. We also water our plants from hoses or tap water. We will not water this plant. What do you think will happen to this plant? How long do you think it will take before it dries out? Introduce the word “wither”. We will overwater this plant. What do you think will happen to this plant?

Plants need dirt. Soil provides nutrients (food) for plants to grow. Can plants grow without soil? (Check on some water plants.) What if I took the dirt out and replaced it with clay or sand? What do you think will happen?

What else does a plant need? Seeds!! Ask students and get responses before showing answer(seeds).

The Great Plant Escape Help Detective Leplant and his partner Bud and Sprout unlock the amazing mysteries of plant life! Students will explore this wonderful website.
