Presentation transcript:

PAST SIMPLE vs. PRESENT PERFECT The name “present” perfect can be confusing though. The reason we call it “present” perfect is because we are talking about the state of things—how things are—NOW. There are four (4) reasons we use Present Perfect: (1) Something that finished happening in the past, but you didn’t say when you did it. (I have been to China) (I went to China in 2012) (2) Something that finished happening in the past, but is still important, now. (I have broken my leg. I can’t walk) (I broke my leg last year, but I’m fine, now) (3) Something that started happening in the past, and is still happening, now. (I have lived in Taipei for 2 years) (I lived in Korea for 4 years) (4) Something that happened a short time ago, using “just”. (usually because the listener is curious why you aren’t still doing it, now) (I have just finished my homework) (I finished my homework last night)

PAST SIMPLE vs. PRESENT PERFECT We know the past is used to talk about things that happened in the past. But if Present Perfect is also talking about past events, how do you know when to use Past Simple and when to use Present Perfect? One easy difference is: We use Past Simple when we say the specific time an event happened, otherwise, we use Present Perfect because there’s “No Time”. (I went to Fiji last month.) (I have been to Fiji.) Another, more difficult difference is: We use Past Simple when the action started and finished in the past, but we use Present Perfect when the action isn’t finished “From Past Through Now”. (I lived in Korea for 4 years.) (I have lived in Taipei for 18 months.) As you can see, the difference in words is small, but the difference meaning is HUGE!

PAST SIMPLE vs. PRESENT PERFECT Here’s a trick to help you remember when to use Past Simple and when to use Present Perfect: Ask yourself, “do I know (exactly) when it happened?” and “is it finished?”. If the answer is “NO” to both, then use Present Perfect. If the answer is “YES” to either of them, use Past Simple. Remember, though, the answer doesn’t have to be in the sentence. I have had 3 Coca-Colas. Because you know me, you know that I am not finished having Coca-Cola this week. I took out the garbage this week. (on Tuesdays) I have taken out the garbage once this week. (on Tuesdays and Fridays) You know when garbage is taken out, so you know whether it’s Past or Present Perfect.

PAST SIMPLE vs. PRESENT PERFECT Tell me if these sentences are Past Simple or Present Perfect: I have played baseball for 5 years. I watched TV with my sister last night. When did you finish your homework? He hasn’t finished his homework, yet. We couldn’t understand what you were saying. How long have you lived in Taipei? Has anyone ever been to Macau? Listen to you teacher! He was calling your name! Who has just spoken Chinese? At which cinema did you see the new Star Wars movie?
