Warm Up Sept. 20 Sit in your usual seat with your tracking sheet and the “Miss Liberty” factoring sheet on your desk. How did you feel about the test yesterday? What parts were easy or hard? (x + 5)(x – 9) (2x + 3)(x – 4) (3x2 – 8)(x – 9) 5. What is an example of a polynomial function?

Unit 3: Polynomial Functions

Unit 3 Objectives Use power functions to model and solve problems; justify results. Solve using tables, graphs, and algebraic properties. Interpret the constants, coefficients, and bases in the context of the problem. Create and use calculator-generated models of polynomial functions of bivariate data to solve problems. Check models for goodness-of-fit; use the most appropriate model to draw conclusions and make predictions.

Today’s Objectives SWBAT factor polynomials. (This will help us interpret their functions tomorrow and throughout the rest of the unit.)

Factoring Review Multiplication backwards. We start with the product and need to find the terms we multiplied to get there.

Common Types of Factoring Greatest Common Factor Easy trinomials Harder trinomials Factor by Grouping Difference of squares The good news: You’ve already learned all of these! The better news: We’ll refresh your memory on them today!

You Try These 3.

People Search When I tell you to do so, walk around to find a classmate who can factor each polynomial. Remember to make an even trade – if they factor one of yours, you must factor one of theirs You can only have each person factor ONE polynomial. Your goal: get all of your polynomials factored within the time limit.

Homework Complete the factoring puzzle. This will earn you your homework stamp and a class work (quiz) grade.
