Boating Safety Dashboard - How your state can participate Tim Spice, Parks & Wildlife Dept. Pamela Dillon, NASBLA
What is a ‘Dashboard’? In information technology, a dashboard is a user interface that, somewhat resembling an automobile's dashboard, organizes and presents information in a way that is easy to read.
The purpose of a Dashboard….. Data is the driver of all dashboards. A dashboard is used to transfer information through a visual process. Dashboards tell stories! Visual senses are very fast. When something is presented visually, the brain digests it very quickly sometimes without deep critical thinking.
Building on 2015 USCG Grant Project The Boating Education Dashboard: Gauging the Effectiveness of Boater Education Policies and Programs The overall goal of this USCG grant funded process is to build a tool for use in improving, evaluating, monitoring and planning our boating safety program. Last year in Seattle, NASBLA shared the prototype Boating Safety Education Dashboard with you. Unfortunately, with only a limited number of licenses, the prototype was not widely used or vetted.
The Boating Safety Dashboard: Nationwide Implementation (1702.12) We are pleased to announce with new 2017-18 funding, we can now move forward to widely share the dashboard tool, updating it with 2016 data, and implementing the next phase of the project which includes state specific templates. Our thanks to the USCG and to Barry Nobles, our grant technical manager, for their support of this project.
Presentation overview Illustrate enhancements now in process for 2017. Cover what to expect in 2018. Provide details on how your state can participate. So what are the enhancements for 2017, what can we expect in 2018 and how can your state participate? This is what we hope to cover in this session.
Step One: WeB License First of all, nationwide implementation. This will be accomplished via implementation of a web link (now underway). Here’s an example of how this will work. (DEMO: Open link and show functionality on website (address secure website issue if needed). Will be able to provide code for individual dashboards and other web site usage. These screens can be shared for individual use or posted for general nationwide viewing.
As way of a review, we currently have 7 dashboards containing national data. Many include individual state data as well. DEMO - Review full Dashboard site – reviewing the other 6 screens developed for prototype with indicated updates for 2016 data (when available from Susan)
STEP TWO: State Specific Templates – TEXAS Example Step two after the web implementation process is available, is development of state specific templates. We have reviewed the ERAC recommendations for these BARD data, and have developed a very basic template showing information on a county by county basis (assuming this is available for all states via BARD). State templates with county names are available in iDashboards graphics. For the first 12 states interested who have permission to show the state specific URL on their websites (on a first come, first served basis), we will work with a Dashboard consultant to create the state template to the county level.
STEP THREE (with Optional Purchase of License) Development of Unique State Dashboards- ALASKA Step Three – for those states interested in additional processes, you will also be able to purchase an individual state license which will allow you to customize your own additional state data. (Show Alaska’s modifications).
NEXT STEPS in grant project: Dashboard Steering Committee will: Work with USCG GTM to evaluate and update Boating Safety Dashboard prototype for national publication via web license Draft internal protocols, policies and procedures regarding data updates Draft a process to provide training and support to states for state-specific dashboard development using provided templates
NEXT STEPS in grant project: NASBLA will: Develop and implement internal protocols, policies and procedures regarding data updates Provide guidance for purchase of individual state licenses Utilize grant funding to provide training and support to states for state-specific dashboard development using provided templates Create a financial plan to ensure continuation and sustainability once grant funds are depleted for a minimum of 5 years.
How YOUR STATE can participate: Secure needed approvals to link state-specific dashboard(s) to your website. Assist in development of state specific template content via a scheduled online training session. Link unique URL to your state website. Review and evaluate metrics annually. Provide feedback/input on needed metrics to determine the measure of effectiveness of state boating safety program.
