Only three ways a ball becomes live:
Presentation transcript:

RULE 6 Live Ball & Dead Ball

When does the ball become live? On a Jump ball (when tossed ball leaves referee’s hand) On a Throw-in (at disposal of thrower) On a Free Throw (at disposal of thrower)

Jump Ball: Jumpers Restrictions Neither jumper shall: Touch ball before highest point Leave circle before ball touched Catch the jump ball Touch ball more than twice

Jump Ball: Non-jumper Restrictions When referee is ready and until ball is tossed non-jumpers shall not: Move onto the center circle Change position around circle Until tossed ball is touched, non-jumpers shall not: Have a foot break plane of center circle Take position in an occupied space Is it legal for teammates to occupy adjacent spaces around the center circle?

Jump Ball Administration: End of Restrictions All restrictions end when touched ball contacts: One of eight non-jumpers Floor Basket Backboard

Alternating Possession Throw-In When does an A/P throw in occur? Held ball Ball goes out of bounds simultaneously Simultaneous free throw violation Live ball lodges between backboard & ring or comes to rest on ring (except: if ft or throw in follows) Simultaneous BI or goaltending Double personal; technical or simultaneous fouls and no team in control to establish POI

Alternating Possession con’t: If A/P has not been established, jump ball is between 2 players involved A/P is reversed when throw-in ends or throwing team violates Violation by throw-in team also causes loss of A/P Fouls do not cause loss of A/P

What causes the ball to become dead? Goal scored F/T will not be successful (when followed by F/T or throw-In) Held ball or ball lodges b/n ring and backboard Whistle is blown (except on a try or tap or F/T in flight) Time expires (except on a try or tap; FG in flight) Foul (except on a try or tap, F/T in flight & trying motion if on opponent) A free throw violation by throwing team Violation (except by opponent during try)

Rule 6: Cases

Case #1 Live Ball Dead Ball Is the ball live?: 1.) During a free throw? 2.) Before the tossed ball is legally tapped? 3.) During a throw in? Yes in all cases. CB page 48 6.1.2

Case #2 Live Ball Dead Ball The referee is ready to toss the ball to start the game. A) A1 backs off the restraining circle. B) B1 moves onto the restraining circle into an unoccupied spot. C) B2 moves off the circle about 5 feet and moves around. D) B3 moves off the circle behind A3 and A4 within 3 feet of the circle. What are the rulings? Legal in A & C. Violation in B & D CB pg. 49; 6.3.2

Case #2 Ruling Moving off the restraining circle and around the circle when more than 3 feet away is permissible. It is a violation to move onto the circle before the ball leaves the ref’s hands or move into an occupied space until the ball is touched as in D CB pg 49 6.3.2

Jump Ball Administration: The tossed ball must be touched by at least one of the jumpers before touching the floor. T/F Both jumpers are required to face their own basket, jump and attempt to touch the tossed ball. T/F RB pg 47, 48: 6-3-6 & “NOTE”

Case #3 Live Ball Dead Ball A1 and B2 are called for a held ball. Team A has the possession arrow and is awarded the designated-spot throw-in. While thrower A3 is still holding the ball out of bounds a) A4 is whistled for a common foul b) B4 is whistled for a common foul c) A3 is commits a violation by stepping over the boundary line Neither team is in the bonus. How is play resumed, and is the possession arrow changed?

Case #3 Ruling In (a) and (b), the throw-in did not end prior to the foul occurring. Thus, team A will retain the possession arrow. In (a) B will receive ball for designated spot throw-in nearest the foul, and in (b) A will receive ball for designated spot throw-in nearest the foul. In (c) a violation by the team making the throw-in causes the throw-in to end and the arrow will be reversed. The result of A3’s violation is team B receiving the ball for a throw-in nearest the spot of the violation. RB pgs 48,49: 6-4-4, 6-4-5

Case #4 Live Ball Dead Ball After the referee tosses the ball to start the first quarter tapper A1 catches the ball. What is the ruling? Violation. Team B gains possession and the arrow is set toward Team A’s basket CB pg 50; 6.4.1

Case #5 Live Ball Dead Ball During an A/P throw-in, thrower A1 holds the ball thru the end line plane and B1 grabs it, resulting in a held ball. What is the ruling? Since the throw-in had not ended and no violation occurred, it is still A’s ball for an A/P throw-in. CB PG 51: 6.4.5

Case #6 Live Ball Dead Ball Team B is ahead, 99-98, with time running out in the fourth quarter. A1 drives to the basket, picks up the dribble, begins the shooting motion and is fouled during that shooting motion. Before the two point try is released, the game-ending horn sounds. A1 continues with the shooting motion and the ball goes through the basket. The whistle for the foul was clearly blown before the horn. The officials rule the try was released after the horn sounded. Should the basket count? Shall free throws be awarded?

Case #6 Ruling The ball becomes dead when time expires at the end of the game since the ball was not in flight prior to the end of the quarter. The try ends when the ball becomes dead, so no basket is scored. Since the foul occurred prior to time expiring, it shall still be penalized. The foul occurred while A1 was in the act of shooting, but the apparent goal was not awarded because the ball was dead. So two free-throws are awarded to A1. The outcome of A1’s free-throws determine which team wins or whether the game goes to overtime. RB pg 49: 6-7-6 C

Case #7 Live Ball Dead Ball During an alternating-possession throw-in by Team A, the throw-in pass is touched by two opponents simultaneously and goes out of bounds. Which team shall get the resulting throw-in?

Case #7 Ruling The alternating possession throw-in ended when the ball was legally touched by an inbounds player. Therefore, the alternating-possession arrow is immediately reversed to point to team B. Since the ball was caused to go out by two opponents simultaneously, an alternating-possession throw-in results and team B shall make the throw-in. RB pg 48 6-4-3b, 6-4-4,

Case #8 Live Ball Dead Ball It is Team B’s turn for the next throw-in under the A/P procedure. By mistake Team A is given the throw-in. Team A inbounds the ball and scores a 2 point field goal. The officials realize the mistake before the ball becomes live. What is the ruling? Once the throw-in ends it is too late to change anything. The possession arrow will remain in Team B’s direction for the next A/P throw-in. CB pg 50 6.4.1 and pg 57 7.5.2

Case # 9 Live Ball Dead Ball Under the alternating-possession procedure Team A has the arrow to start the second quarter. A1 slides his pivot foot before releasing the ball directly onto the court. Is this a violation? No! The dribble and traveling rules are not in effect during a throw-in. RB pg 47; 6-1-1

Case #10 Live Ball Dead Ball A1 is fouled in the act of shooting by B1. While the ball is in the cylinder above the basket, A2 touches the ball. What is the ruling? B/I by A1 causes the ball to become dead and no goal can be scored. However A1 is awarded two free throws for being fouled in the act of shooting. CB pg 54: 6.7.9
