Why are we here Our class has been collecting research on litter in the Digital Harbor High School building. Here we present our research as well as our proposals to improve this problem.
Fact 1 How many pounds of trash does each student make? 45-90 pounds
Fact 2 Individuals under 30 are more likely to litter than those who are older. In fact, age, and not gender, is a significant predictor of littering behavior.
Fact 3 If individuals change their behavior on littering will there be less trash? Studies shows that if someone makes proper disposals accessible then the decrease of the amount of littering will keep focused on individuals responsibility
Trash at Digital
More trashcans less trash We have a lot more trash in the hallways then in trashcans. If there were more trashcans in the hallways it would be less trash to pick up off the floor.
Recycling If we recycle trash, we can have a cleaner environment and less air pollution. The average person generates over 4 pounds of trash every day and about 1.5 tons of solid waste per year.
Facts about recycling The EPA estimates that 75% of the American waste stream is recyclable, but we only recycle about 30% of it. We generate 21.5 million tons of food waste each year. If we composted that food, it would reduce the same amount of greenhouse gas as taking 2 million cars off the road. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to listen to a full album on your iPod. Recycling 100 cans could light your bedroom for two whole weeks.
