Ubuntu Basics Version of Linux based on Debian Founded by Mark Shuttleworth Initial release in October 2004: 4.10 (code name: Warty Warthog) Releases every 6 months, with Long-Term Support releases every 2 years Open, community-driven development with core funding from Canonical Estimated users: over 20 million

What does “Ubuntu” Mean? “humanity toward others” “I am what I am because of who we all are”

Philosophical Goals Every computer user should have the freedom to download, run, copy, distribute, study, share, change and improve their software ofr any purpose, without paying licensing fees Every computer user should be able to be able to use their software in the language of their choice Every computer user should be given every opportunity to use software, even if they work under disability
