Initial BIS installation Configuration during initial installation: No Big Wheels No Truck No ECT (+ flexible chain on top) Extended Calorimeters inside Toroid Special access platforms inside Toroid

Operations necessary for the BIS7, 8 removal and BIS78 installation: Disconnect BIS7, 8 services Necessary to disconnect BIL6 and slide it to access BIS7 services (?) Remove AFT brackets Fix rail extensions, pulling ropes Connect rails to the installation frame rails Slide chambers along rails to the installation frame Mount chambers on surface and remove from the installation frame Need to reinforce BIS rails ( weight of new chambers 3 times more, ~ 300kg) Put new BIS78 into the frame and lower down Installation operations inverse to removal Calorimeter run position BIS7&8 BIL AFT Bracket Point 2 Point 1 Access needed in these positions for: BIS services Rails extensions AFT brackets Pulling chambers Rail extensions

Weight estimation for the new BIS7&8 is about 300kg Weight estimation for the new BIS7&8 is about 300kg. This is 3x times more! Therefore the rail profile needs to be reinforced. Especially the extension rail, with quite a large span, should be reinforced. Consider a stiffener profile 80-60-4 Ix=1.58e-6m4 stiffness improvement factor=8 Iy=2.68e-6m4 stiffness improvement factor=32 Weight 4.6kg/m BIS 7&8 Weight Estimation X Y Y X

Schematic layout BIS7&8 rail reinforcement. Rail reinforcement + BIS bracket Schematic rail layout BIS7&8 deformations. Bracket deformation and super static effects are not taken into account. IP Ymax(1500N) = -0.5mm Ymax(1500N) = -6mm BIS Bracket Ymax(1500N) = -140mm

Connectors on both sides? BIS services CSM Signal cables (blue) – easy to disconnect from chamber (?) (~30 screws/nuts) New cables for BIS78 will be flat like for BME and BMG HV filter HV cables Connectors on both sides? DCS t° sensor cables (white cables, no connectors on chamber – to be disconnected from box B - field sensor cables (2 flat cables - both sides with connectors Need to disconnect on the box ?) RASMUX Alignment from axial/paraxial ( white cables) LED (red cables) Connectors on both sides

BIS services Gas connections BIS boxes cables Sliding of BILs along the rails is necessary to create space for disconnection of BIS services Gas connections

Axial Force Transfer A. F. T Axial Force Transfer A.F.T. Bracket Removal For the BIS7&8 removal, the AFT Bracket, mounted on the front of the BT-vacuum vessel, needs to be dismounted. The AFT bracket is screwed on the BT and could simply be dismounted. AFT Bracket AFT Bracket Installation. During ATLAS-installation a special ‘fishing pole’ palonnier was designed. The head of this palonnier can rotate and this tooling could be reused for the AFT bracket removal. Currently this palonnier is stored in the tent b. 609.

Configuration of detectors in the cavern during BIS removal/installation ECT can be only in large opening position : on USA side Extended Calorimeter : in RUN, Standard or Long opening

Large opening with environment Z 13000 BIS Rail Extension Model ST0620635 – Side C Large opening with environment Z 14700 BIS rail extension Z= 13205 BT coils: Z= 12630 BW: Z= 19066 envelope ECT: Z= 13380

There is quite a big difference in forward region configuration compare to initial BIS chambers installation. ECT flexible chain s.9 chain – no crane access to BIS s.10 LAr pipe – problems with BIS manipulation in sector 7 ( TE chain constrain)

Access possibilities for point 1 Access from scaffolding Access from barrel platforms (need additional arrangements) and rails Access from calorimeter in ~ standard opening (sectors 3,4,5,6,7, 12,13,14) (No access to gas connection on IP side: slide BILs ?) 2.1m

Access possibilities for Point 2 : scaffolding or nacelle For the removal of the light weight BIS, hand pulling winches are probably not required. However, the weight of the new BIS7&8 will be 3 times more, +/-300kgf. Therefore the use of hand winches, also because of poor sliding properties and the weak support structure, should be considered for the installation of the new BIS7&8. Estimated static friction force for the new BIS7&8 F (static) ≤ μ (s) * F (N) ≤ 60kg

Small Wheel Scaffolding Sector16 Access to AFT Bracket For BIS7 removal and BIS7&8 installation, the balcony should be removed. Sector16 Access to AFT Bracket SW Scaffolding BIS AFT Bracket Small Balcony

Using the SW Scaffolding for the BIS7 removal and BIS7&8 installation. Conclusions The removal of BIS7 and installation of the new BIS7&8 consists of various actions. Therefore flexibility is a key issue and this makes the SW scaffolding less attractive. The Palazzani is much more flexible and when possible this access platform is recommended. To the SW scaffolding, two types of balconies could be attached to SW scaffolding to create some flexibility, a small- and large balcony. The SW scaffolding + balconies could be useful to unscrew the AFT bracket. The balconies should be removed when the BIS7 is moved out.

AFT Bracket Removal – Calorimeter + ECT in Parking Position For the BIS7&8 removal, the AFT Bracket, mounted on the front of the BT-vacuum vessel, needs to be dismounted. The AFT bracket is screwed on the BT and could simply be dismounted but, because it is inside the detector, it can only be removed with a so called ‘fishing pole’ palonnier. For the AFT Bracket removal, several ‘fishing pole palonniers’ are considered such as the R-2367 palonnier, the CMS tooling and the Parisian tooling. Conclusions: AFT Bracket removal – calorimeter and ECT are in parking positions When the calorimeter and the ECT are on in their the trucks and parking positions, it is definitely not an easy task and there are still a lot of uncertainties. At the moment there are only two sector where this looks feasible, sectors2, 4 and perhaps sector14. Access is NOT investigated in this study. The CMS tooling can NOT be used because it will interfere with the BT. The Parisian tooling seems in most cases too short but looks useful for sectors12 and 14.

The following ‘fishing pole’ palonniers are considered; R-2367 Palonnier – ‘Wisconsin’ Tooling – ‘Parisian’ Tooling Wisconsin tooling versus R-2367 Palonnier Parisian tooling versus R-2367 Palonnier R-2367 Palonnier rotating wheel Wisconsin Tooling

BIS7&8 removal and BIS78 installation In the ECT parking position, for sector 8 and 10, there is a conflict between the BIS installation frame and the ECT. Therefore, for sector 8 and 10, the installation frame can not be used. Conflict

Sling angles of the two 5T cranes. For certain sectors, the min distance of the eyebolts of the installation frame is less than 1500mm. Therefore the slings makes a small angle of about 2 degrees. The minimum distance between the two 5T cranes is 1500mm.
