Respond with 4-5 sentences 9/7 Bellringer Respond with 4-5 sentences In the late 1600s and early 1700s, the British government began to change some of the laws that governed the American colonies. The colonist did not always like these changes. How would you feel if the rules you had to follow changed suddenly? How do you think you would react?

Wealthy English colonists typically lived on the best lands closer to the ocean Former indentured servants and immigrants (Scottish, Irish and German) lived in the “backcountry”

Government in the Colonies All British colonies were governed with a policy called Salutary Neglect Parliament & the king were in charge, but did not enforce policies as long as Britain profited from the colonies

In mercantilism you want to export more than you import Around 1650, Britain began to use an economic policy called mercantilism Mercantilism Basically it means that colonies exist to generate wealth for the mother country In mercantilism you want to export more than you import

By the 1700s, church attendance in the colonies had declined In the 1730s & 1740s, the Great Awakening began as preachers used revivals to encourage religious conversions

Preachers like Jonathan Edwards & George Whitefield were popular evangelists Preachers used “fire & passion” & camp revivals” to encourage people to examine their faith The Great Awakening led to a rise of new religious denominations like Methodists & Baptists The Great Awakening took place in all colonies & became the first national American event

Advertise a Colony In groups of 2-3, create an advertisement poster for one of the 13 colonies. Your goal is to entice other people to come to your colony. In the advertisement, be sure to include: The Name of the colony and its region The person/group that founded it and the reason for it being created Reasons someone might want to come to the colony (social, political, economic) A hand-drawn map of the colony and a hand-drawn picture or two of what new settlers can anticipate in the colony
