ARE THERE SOME COMMON DEFICIENCIES I CAN AVOID? MY LABORATORY… ARE THERE SOME COMMON DEFICIENCIES I CAN AVOID?

OF A TYPICAL WASTEWATER LAB? HOW CAN MY LABORATORY AVOID SOME COMMON DEFICIENCIES FROM AN ON SITE LAB EVALUATION OF A TYPICAL WASTEWATER LAB?

“TYPICAL LAB” HERE MEANS TESTING BOD TSS TOTAL PHOSPHORUS AMMONIA

1. EQUIPMENT

DID I PURCHASE ANY NEW EQUIPMENT SINCE THE LAST ON SITE EVALUATION?

IF YES… DO I HAVE A COPY OF THE NEW CALIBRATION PROCEDURE?

AM I FOLLOWING THE NEW CALIBRATION PROCEDURE AM I FOLLOWING THE NEW CALIBRATION PROCEDURE? IF ANSWER IS YES, THEN I AM FINE

THE QUESTION IS….WHY NOT? IF THE ANSWER IS NO… THE QUESTION IS….WHY NOT?

IF THE REASON IS… “BECAUSE SOMEONE TOLD ME I COULD DO IT THAT WAY” THAT IS NOT A GOOD ENOUGH REASON

YOU NEED TO FOLLOW THE NEW OPTICAL DO METER’S MANUFACTURER’S CALIBRATION EXACTLY

THE BOTTOM LINE IS… YOU MUST CALIBRATE AN OPTICAL DO METER and a MEMBRANE DO METER EVERY DAY THAT THEY ARE USED

2. PERSONNEL

ARE ALL THE ANALYSTS THE SAME AS THE LAST “ON SITE” LAB EVALUATION?

IF YES… ASK YOURSELF IF YOU HAVE AN INITIAL DEMONSTRATION OF CAPABILITY OR (IDC) FOR EACH ANALYST? IF YES... THEN … YOUR LAB IS OK

IF THE ANSWER IS NO… FOR EVERY YOU MUST HAVE A RECORD ANALYST OF AN IDC FOR EVERY ANALYST THAT DOES TESTING

3. METHODS

DO I HAVE THE CORRECT METHOD FOR THE TEST I ACTUALLY USE? BOD TSS HOT PLATE DIGESTION TOTAL PHOSPHORUS AMMONIA ISE

THERE IS ONLY ONE APPROVED METHOD IN STANDARD METHODS, APPROVED- FOR EACH OF THESE METHODS THE APPROVED METHOD THAT YOU USE MUST BE IN THE CORRECT FORMAT OTHERWISE-THE COMPUTER WILL NOT BE ABLE TO READ IT SM 21ST ED 5210 B SM 5210 B-2001

APPROVED METHODS AND THEIR FORMATS BOD SM 5210 B-2001 APPROVED METHODS AND THEIR FORMATS

APPROVED METHODS AND THEIR FORMATS TSS SM 2540 D-1997 APPROVED METHODS AND THEIR FORMATS

APPROVED METHODS AND THEIR FORMATS HOTPLATE DIGESTION TOTAL PHOSPHORUS SM 4500-P E-1999 APPROVED METHODS AND THEIR FORMATS

APPROVED METHODS AND THEIR FORMATS AMMONIA ISE SM 4500-NH3 D-1997 APPROVED METHODS AND THEIR FORMATS

CORRECT ELECTRONIC METHOD FOR BOD? AM I ORDERING THE CORRECT ELECTRONIC METHOD FOR BOD? UNLESS YOU HAVE THE 21ST EDITION OF STANDARD METHODS YOU WILL HAVE TO ORDER ELECTRONIC METHODS NEW HARD COPIES OF 21ST EDITION ARE NO LONGER BEING SOLD

HACH TEST N TUBE (TNT) METHODS: AMMONIA COLORIMETRIC HACH 10205 5th ED PHOSPHORUS HACH 8190 (Equiv) 5th ED HACH 8190 4th ED

VALID PHOSPHORUS CALIBRATION CURVES

EFFLUENT PHOSPHORUS SAMPLES THAT WERE ABOVE 1 MG/L WERE NOT DILUTED TO BENEATH 1 MG/L THE RESULTS OF1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, AND 2.0 MG/L NO LONGER FOLLOW A STRAIGHT LINE THESE RESULTS SHOULD HAVE BEEN DILUTED TO 1 MG/L OR LESS IF I AM USING WWTP OPTIMIZATION TO OBTAIN LOWER PHOSPHORUS, IS MY CALIBRATION CURVE STILL VALID?

IF I AM ONLY CALIBRATING PHOSPHORUS UP TO 1 mg/L THEN I MUST DILUTE MY SAMPLES MORE BUT MY EFFLUENT RESULTS RANGE FROM 2-3 mg/L

ANALOGY : WOULD I CALIBRATE MY GUN SIGHTS AT 1 YARD AND THEN, EXPECT TO HIT A DEER AT A 100 YARDS?

NOT IF YOU WANT TO BAG A DEER. CALIBRATE THE RIFLE AT 15 YARDS AND 100 YARDS

MY LAB CAN AVOID SOME COMMON DEFICIENCIES IN AN ON SITE LAB EVALUATION FOR A TYPICAL WASTEWATER LAB
