Welcome English 9: Class of 2020 Brought to you by Mrs. Goff, Mrs. Baker and Mr. McNeal Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

Hammond High School’s Motto: Where people are important… Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

Hammond High School’s Mission Statement: The mission of Hammond High School is to provide an academically challenging and nurturing environment, preparing students to be responsible, productive, life-long learners in a diverse and rapidly changing society. Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

What will we learn and explore this year? How to get along with everyone in the class by being courteous. How to start thinking about being “College and Career Ready”. Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016 So what am I really learning besides Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening? How to read and interact with the text How to interpret and analyze text How to support your assertions, orally and written How to document your support How to write Five Paragraph Essay Research Paper 6 + 1 Traits of Writing Poetry and Figurative Language How to control your use of language Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling (GPS) Types of Phrases Parts of Speech How words function in a sentence Sentence combining Revising vs. Editing (RED) Sentences vs. Incomplete Sentences Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

Why should I learn this stuff? You will earn your first of four English credits which are needed to graduate. If you learn this stuff, peers and your parents will think you are very smart. You will present yourself better to others (remember first impressions are important!). It is so much fun that one day you might want to grow up and become an English teacher. Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

And finally, the real reason… Once you leave Hammond High School, your free education is over. You will pay for any further training and education, so grab as much as you can while it is free! Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

Focus this year…Literacy What is literacy? The ability to make meaning out of a particular symbol system. Examples: English: The dog wore a red hat. Math: 25/5 + 2 – 3 = ? Spanish: Mi cuarto es bonito. Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

What information do you see in this picture? The text is now a picture, but it conveys information to you. Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

What do I need to do to be successful? Come to school ready to learn and work. Bring materials to class. Attend everyday. Complete your work (classwork and homework with accuracy). Ask questions. Be responsible for your learning. Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016 What can help you… Learn and use study skills and strategies Contrary to popular opinion, if you are truly learning you will get frustrated, so keep on working! Work through the frustration – do not quit on us! Be responsible for yourself and do not blame others. Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

What will challenge you this year? Time management and procrastination Complete vs. Accurate Being responsible Unnecessary drama which takes the focus off learning Finding your “group” Putting your name on papers. Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

Teacher Expectations (Goff, Baker, and McNeal) Our desks are off limits (Black Hole). If you need something off it, just ask ! You will be in your seat with your materials when the bell rings for class to begin. We dismiss the class. No heads on desk or sleeping in class. Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

Expectations continued… If you have something to say, raise your hand. All completed work goes into the appropriate turn in drawer. Check your folder to get make-up-work (only with an excused absence). Your daily planner = your hall pass. Leave the room in good condition; pick up after yourself. Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

Electronic Device Policy: For OUR Room The teachers determine usage. Unless stated, your device will be off. We will let you know when it is appropriate to have out your device to use it. If you have it out, and do not turn it off and put it away when asked, we will take your device. If you refuse to give us your device, you will receive an office referral, and the front office will have your device. Your parents will need to come in to pick it up. Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

How do the teachers help me? They are good listeners, yet they can not read minds. Home to school connection. (Yes, we call home for good and concerns!). After school help. They get you organized to learn! Homework, assignments, and grades are online: Canvas Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016 And… Remember the 3 R’s – Respect Property Respect Others Respect Yourself ! Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016

THINK- a mnemonic for courtesy T= Is it True? H = Is it Helpful ? I = Is it Inspiring? N = Is it Necessary? K = Is it Kind? Mary K. Goff/ Hammond HS/2016
