THE CONTENT AND SCOPE OF ISPM-15 Title: Guidelines for regulating wood packaging material (WPM) in international trade Content: phytosanitary requirements for WPM (including dunnage) made of raw wood and used in international trade (import-export) pallets, dunnage, crates, blocks, drums, cases, collars, skids …. Scope: to reduce the risk of introduction and/or spread of quarantine pests, harmful to plants (forest protection) Validity: 01.01.2004 (FAO-IPPC, ICPM) 12 September 2005, Ljubljana & Velenje, Slovenia

12 September 2005, Ljubljana & Velenje, Slovenia PHYTOSANITARY ROLE PARS is a national plant protection organization that is according to ISPM-15 responsible for: registration of wood processors and authorization for use of official ISPM-15 mark verifying technical and expert qualifications of wood processors during the registration procedures assuring fulfilment of ISPM-15 phytosanitary requirements through certification body and phytosanitary inspection: efficacy control of appropriate treatment (HT or MB) for eradication of quarantine pests, harmful to plants 12 September 2005, Ljubljana & Velenje, Slovenia

12 September 2005, Ljubljana & Velenje, Slovenia IMPLEMENTATION in RS Currently 22 producers / processors of WPM are registered for the purpose of ISPM-15, but only one of them for the treatment with MB: DDD d.o.o. Koper, located in Port Koper MB is used only for pre-shipment, in special cases also for importing consignments that do not meet prescribed requirements 12 September 2005, Ljubljana & Velenje, Slovenia

12 September 2005, Ljubljana & Velenje, Slovenia CONCLUSIONS in Slovenia MB is not in use in agriculture (pre-harvest or post-harvest) fumigation with MB is done only in Port Koper on WPM according to ISPM-15 heat treatment is an alternative given by the standard and applied in RS ISPM-15 revision: new fumigation schedule, alternatives to MB (phosphine, sulfuryl fluoride, carbonyl sulphide, irradiation, chemical pressure impregnation new standard – draft: Alternatives to MB 12 September 2005, Ljubljana & Velenje, Slovenia
