How is Rio improving the favelas? Do Now!

Key question / Learning outcomes Section A: Urban Issues and Challenges How is Rio improving the favelas? Key idea Specification content Urban growth creates opportunities and challenges for cities in LICs and NEEs A case study of a major city in an LIC of NEE to illustrate: An example of how urban planning is improving the quality of life for the urban poor. LEARNING OUTCOME… Describe what management strategies are being used in Rio. Explain the pros and cons of the different strategies. Evaluate which management strategy has been the most effective.

Learning Link Which zone(s) are most of the favelas located in Rio? Why have people been moving into favelas?

New Information/Activity In our previous lesson we learned about how crime is being dealt with by using pacification. Pacification: the act of forcibly surpressing or eliminating a population considered to be hostile. Watch the video on what is being done to improve Rio’s favelas. Fill in the questions on your worksheet- they are in order during the video. For each type of management mentioned in the video, fill in the pros/cons table to help determine which is more effective.

How can planning of the city itself help the people of the favelas? New Information/Activity Read the information on the Favela Bairro Project. When you are done, answer the following questions: What does the project do? Where has the project been implemented? Who has the project helped? How has it helped them? Why has the project not been completely successful?

Reflection Reflection 9 mark question Evaluate which management method has been most effective in Rio’s favelas. For a 9 mark answer you must: Paragraph 6 - A conclusion paragraph giving a final decision/view. Highlight the command word so you know what to do. A relevant geographical point in each paragraph. Leave a space between each paragraph. Have 6 paragraphs in total (Balance between different parts of the question): Relevant named examples or case study. Accurate SPaG for gain 3 extra marks. (easy marks) Paragraph 1 - introduction – Say what you are going to be answering. Paragraphs 2 and 3 for/similarities. Paragraphs 4 and 5 against/differences.
