Favela Marcos must go!

Favela Marcos can be found on the hillside of a large South American city. The land was invaded over 20 years ago by migrants from a poor farming area in the North of the country. This area had experienced a series of droughts which led to crop failure. The Favela inhabitants are a well organised community who have made efforts to improve their life. They are mostly young families with school age children and most adults work in the city market where crafts and food are sold. There is a small central fund that is used to support improvements to the Favela. However, they recently discovered some devastating news from the city council. . . THE FAVELA MUST GO!

The local council have been told by the city transport authority of plans to extend a coastal road to a two lane route. This will involve clearing the Favela. The city authorities are concerned about the displacement of this large community as 2,000 people will be homeless. They have recently met with the community to prepare the development of an alternative site that they have received funding for from the World Bank. The problem that faces the city authority and Favela Marcos is how the money should be spent. You have been asked to decide how best the money for the redevelopment of the Favela should be spent.

Part 1 – Spending your money! L.O: To decide what to purchase for your Favela You have 5,000 units to spend and lots of choices to make! The orange sheet explains how much everything costs and what you get for your money. SO GET SPENDING! Remember – you cannot go over 5,000 units and use a pencil!

Part 2 – Designing your Favela L.O: To create a plan of your Favela Its now time to look at everything you have bought and plan where everything will fit in your Favela. The orange sheet will help you to remember what all of your purchases are like Remember – all of the plots of land MUST be accurate!

You now have to let us know all about your new Favela Marcos. Part 3 – The report! L.O: To justify all the decisions you have made about your Favela. You now have to let us know all about your new Favela Marcos. The yellow sheet will help you structure your report and the levelling sheet will help you get the best level you can!
