Applications of Nanomaterials

I - Medical field: Drug delivery: Nano sized active material is kept inside a biomaterial matrix and administered to patients. They cause targeted, controlled drug delivery. It prevents the low or high dosage and side effects. They are much used in cancer therapy .

quantum dots Quantum dots are tiny crystals of semiconducting materials that glow when they are stimulated by ultraviolet light.

Bio medical instruments: CNTs attached to the tips of the scanning probe, microscopes are used to identify and characterize biological specimens. Lung cancer cells Brain cancer

Biological accessories: Bone cements and bone plates used in hospitals are containing nano materials.

Nano materials are also used to develop miniature video camera attached to a blind person’s glasses.

They are applied in contact lenses , Dental implants and artificial heart valves also.

II – Electronics industry 1. Integrated memory circuits in electronic gadgets are made of nano tube composites are found to be superior quality.

2. CNT are poor transmitters of Electro magnetic radiations 2. CNT are poor transmitters of Electro magnetic radiations. So, they are acting as EM shield for costly electronic materials.

In fuel cells - hydrogen storage is made easy with CNT In fuel cells - hydrogen storage is made easy with CNT. In Li batteris – Lithium storage is made easy with CNT.

4. Transistors with p-n junction can be made by nano wires.

Electronics Applications St. Joseph's College of Engineering

III – Chemical Industry: 1. As catalyst: a) Ru + CNT for hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde b) For converting Nickel oxide to nickel c) For converting Aluminum chloride to Aluminium 2. As gas sensors: CNT shows increase in electrical conductivity due to charge transfer from CNT to NO2. So, they are used to detect presence of gases.

Selecting Fruits with Carbon Nanotube Sensors A single-walled carbon nanotube sensors that can selectively detect ethylene gas at concentrations as low as 0.5 ppm. Such Nano sensors may be used to monitor ethylene gas emitted from fruits to monitor their ripening.

3. In composite industries, CNT is used to increase the tensile strength. (eg) Al-CNT

St. Joseph's College of Engineering Aerospace St. Joseph's College of Engineering

4. Magnetic nano materials are used to remove metal contamination in water technology. 5. Lithium nano clusters are acting as very good sensors and catalysts.

IV – Industrial applications: 1. ZnO + TiO2 Transparent layer. So, they are used in cosmetics, sunscreen lotions.

by nano material coatings. 2. In aquarium, self cleaning glass is made by nano material coatings.

3. In food package industries, Ag nano material is acting as anti – microbial agent.

4. In textile industries, Nano fibre is used to produce wrinkle free, stain resistance to coffee and wine.

Ag nano particles are used in socks to make them odour free by killing bacteria.

Save fuel 5. Auto mobiles: Nano fuel additives are added to reduce consumption rate. Save fuel

Nano ATO ( Antimony-Tin-Oxide) is used in car windows to reduce solar heat radiation.

solar heat reducing glass

6. Energy sectors: In solar power, nano technology reduces cost of photovoltaic cells by 100 times.

7. Applications in air-conditioners Ag nanomaterials are used as anti bacterial agent in air-conditioners

Applications in fridges Ag nanomaterials are used as anti bacterial agent in fridges

CNT’s are used as antifouling agents in marine engineering
