Tejano Passport Program Dr. Andi Quiros and Dr. Gertrud Konings

The Tejano Passport Program The Main Purpose of the Tejano Passport Program: Encourage community participation and volunteerism Another important Purpose: Increasing the students’ comfort with Technology

Why Promote Civic Engagement? It is our Mission, and a High Impact Practice for engaging students It makes our college a Community College It is fun for students and instructors alike On our questionnaires, 93.5 % of students said they wanted to be involved 424 followers on Instagram and Twitter, and Facebook posting views are in the 1000s Thousands of students already participated – 33 students already earned medallions Three instructors already earned a gold medallion

The Tejano Passport Calendar EPCC & Community Events www.epcc.edu/qep

The QR code Information Provided: Name of the event The actual QR code IT has prepared an automatic (after Log-in) recording system for QR scans The address link to the recording EPCC website SnapChat can be used for scanning the code!

Extra Credit: Best Practice: Students with a minimum of 30 credit points earn the Extra Credit During the last week of class check the total credit points earned Students may scan again the First Time Scanner code from the website to log in and find their points earned Remind those who reached 75 points to apply for the medallion (including yourself!) Application form is on the website (www.epcc.edu/qep) Email the form to Andi Quiros. Address is on our website

How Best to Proceed in Class First week of Class: Introduce only the Tejano Passport website and calendar; wait on discussing the program. Assignment for the next class: Download a free QR Scanner and/or Reader app Get your EPCC computer log-in and password from the computer center Those without a cell phone with Wi-Fi should check out a tablet from the Computer Lab on campus

How Best to Proceed in Class Second week of class: During class: Distribute the Tejano Passport flier to all students to explain the program. Contact us, if you need more fliers. Display from our website www.epcc.edu/qep the FIRST TIME SCANNER code Ask all students to scan the code and log into the passport following the description on the flier (Remind them that they can scan the code using SnapChat!) Ask those who have a problem to visit the Computer lab after class

How Best to Proceed in Class Second week of class: Give a brief assignment for the third week to lead students to explore the online calendar: Example (how I implement it in Anatomy class): Visit the website www.epcc.edu/qep and find three events that you think could make a difference for your health (physically and/or mentally) if you participate. Choose one of them to attend. Explain your reasoning in a one page (500 words) essay.

Third week of class and on: Go to an event and scan the QR Code with a QR reader or go to the website under the code Hiking at the Wyler Tramway

How Can You Help? Post to Facebook (www.facebook.com/learning aboutthecommunity) or tweet your experience, and use hashtags like #TejanoPassport #ElPaso #EPCCPride and you can give us a shout out by adding @EPCC_QEP to your Tweet post (and Instagram!)

What is in it for you? If you and your colleagues plan an event in which you want students (and faculty) to either participate or volunteer, let us know! We will give your event a code, add it to the calendar and use social media (Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook) to advertise it

What is in it for you? We use Master Student Volunteers – also from YOUR classes! Students earn Service Learning credits Master Student Training Sessions: Second Week of the Semester Wednesday, January 24, at VV, in room B241 at 1 pm Thursday, January 25, at TM - Conference Room 1005 in the Deans office at 10 am

What is in for you? A free luncheon at the end of the year You too can earn a medallion! A certificate of participation for your portfolio A mentioning of event organizers in faculty newsletter Lots of Fun!

How to Scan the QR code?
