Bell Task Your books have been marks. You have two SWANs to respond to. Use the purple pens to complete the tasks. Use the resources on your table if needed. Team PE

Identify the types of joints and ranges of movement (4-5) Link the ranges of movements to a variety of joints (6-7) Decide the movements involved in a variety of sporting situations. (8-9)

I want to see you identifying the ranges of movements. I want to hear you making judgements about movements linked to certain joints. I want you to feel the types of movements, hearing you link them to the actions and sporting situations.

Types of Joint and Ranges of Movement

Starter (Pairs) What movements can you get at: Hip Knee Foot Ankle Shoulder Ankle

Movements of synovial joints Flexion: Movement where the angle between bones reduces. Extension: Movement where the angle between bones increases. Abduction: Movement where the limbs are moved away from the body. Adduction: Movement where the limbs are moved back towards the body. Rotation: Turning a limb along its long axis. Plantar flexion: Movement at ankle where the toes are pointed towards the ground. Dorsiflexion: Movement at the ankle where the toes are pulled up towards the knee. You must be able to know/explain the seven different types of movement.

Types of Joint Hinge Joint Ball and socket Joint

Range of Movement At a Hinge Joint (Elbow)

Range of Movement At a Hinge Joint (Knee)

Ranges of Movement At the Hip Joint (Ball and Socket) Rapid Recall: Adduction = Adding to the midline of the body Abduction= Taking away from the midline of the body

Ranges of Movement At the Shoulder Joint (Ball and Socket)

Ranges of Movement At the Ankle Joint (Hinge Joint) Rapid Recall: Plantar Flexion= Pointing at the floor

Practical Task In the sports hall there are a number of practical situations. Your role is to analyse the movements and identify the movements that are taking place around the joints

Chest Pass Basketball Set up In 2s use a chest pass from cone to cone. Focus on… The movements of the arms What is the joint being used? What type of joint is it? What bones meet to create the joint?

Lateral Raises Focus on… The movements at the shoulder joint Set up Take two weights, keeping your arms slightly bend, lift up and out. Focus on… The movements at the shoulder joint What is the joint being used? What type of joint is it? What bones meet to create the joint?

Instep Pass Set up Use an instep pass from cone to cone. Focus on… The movements at the hip and knee joint. What is the joint being used? What type of joint is it? What bones meet to create the joint?

Overarm throw Focus on… The movements at the shoulder and elbow Set up Overarm throw the tennis ball from cone to cone. Focus on… The movements at the shoulder and elbow What is the joint being used? What type of joint is it? What bones meet to create the joint?

Jump onto step Set up Place aerobic step in front of you, jump onto it. Focus on… The movements of the legs and ankle What is the joint being used? What type of joint is it? What bones meet to create the joint?

Exam style questions Describe the 2 types of joint and the ranges of movement those joints allow. Define the 7 ranges of movement, linking them to a specific joint. Using a sporting example of your choice. Analyse the ranges of movement taking place at joints.
