Yes to Telepresence Surgery Mathew Davies

What is it? TESS, or the Telepresence Surgery System, is a new and innovative way of performing surgeries. With the use of robotic arms, on-screen 3D imaging and hypersensitive controls, surgeons are able to perform these surgeries without even being in the same room, hospital, state, or country.

Telepresence Surgery

Pros vs Cons Pros Cons Minimally invasive Less post-op therapy Proven safer than hands-on surgery Cleaner No exposure to disease Use of thin needles to perform surgery Cons Price of the TESS is $1 million Not all hospitals have access to the TESS Hospitals that really need it, aren’t able to afford it

The Future… NASA actually exploring the use of surgical robots for emergency surgery on astronauts in a submarine to simulate conditions in space in a project called NEEMO 7. The government is investing $12 million in a project currently going on called “Trauma Pod,” which is the TESS system inside of a moving vehicle that can be remotely driven. This allows for us to go deep into the warzone, under fire, and pick up wounded soldiers and bring them inside the pod. While in the pod, the TESS system will be hooked up and able to perform emergency surgery on soldiers in war-like situations.

Yes to Telepresence Surgery Needs to be made more affordable Hospitals will be able to perform more surgeries at a higher rate It’ll be safer for the patient, along with the surgeon and their staff Could have the potential to save thousands of lives in countries that need it the most
