 POTS  Much earlier, in the twentieth century to be precise businesses, campuses and homes used what was known as POTS (Plain Old Telephone system). This is basically the traditional standard telephone technology that used the public switched telephone network (PSTN).  Packets  Packets simply acts as electronic envelops into which voice signals to be transmitted are put. Packets include not only the voce signal but also the network addresses of both the sender and the receiver.  IP Telephony  IP technology was way more superior to the two earlier telephony services. It uses the internet protocol for its transmission and this comes with quite a number of additional capabilities. Initially, this telephony service depended on internet but today this is not absolutely necessary.

 Varieties  When you decide to get VoIP phones, it is important to realize that there are many gadgets out there that use this platform. First, there are wireless phones that are built on the VoIP platform. These phones connect the network through Wi-Fi or other wired connections. However, most people seem to agree that the wireless phones are the more convenient choice. This is given that most people are used to having cell phones and when you give them a wired phone, they get a different experience.  On the other hand, there are soft phones that use VoIP technology. Soft phones are normally installed in a computer. The computer uses special software to make and receive calls. This becomes convenient especially for those who spend most of their time on their computers.  Lastly, there is a third type of VoIP telephone that is known as conferencing. Conferencing VoIP functions exactly the same as the old styled phones but however, these uses an IP, the phone can be used to make calls to multiple participants in a conference facility or within a large organization.

 The properties  Most VoIP phones comes with basic features such as ability to make a call, hold a call and even drop a call. The systems also have the ability to show caller ID. However, you don’t have to continue conversing with someone you don’t know. Just transfer the person to voice mail and if you think you can converse with that person, just continue with the call.  On the other hand, VoIP calls have the ability to record calls. It is true that large number of IP phones have the capability of receiving fax through a system called PBX hosted system. These faxes can then be sent to user through . This will always come as a PDF file attachment. IP Telephony also allows call queuing whereby calls are allowed to wait for an available agent. This works perfectly especially in call centers. The system is used in different parts of the world.

 Improved Sound Clarity  When VoIP phones were first introduced to the market, their clarity as far as voice was concerned, was a little bit wanting. Over time however, this has seen tremendous advancement and is now clearer that the traditional standard telephony.  Superior Voice Mails  The earlier telephony technologies also had voice mail capabilities but they were not nearly a match for VoIP phones. They come with voice mail capabilities that are way more advanced than the former. Now, even when making overseas calls, the sound clarity is perfect.  Call Forwarding.  It is frustrating for a customer to hear the phone ringing on the other side yet no one is picking it up to serve him. Call forwarding, call queuing and call transferring are only three among the many features of IP phones that give customers a wonderful experience.

 Voic s/ unified messaging  Voic has for a longtime been very critical feature for notifying users that someone tried to reach them and delivering the voice message left by the caller. In IP phones, voice mail capability is way more advanced than in the traditional Standard telephony. Here you can receive voice mails on your phone, as SMS or have it transcribed and sent to your as a PDF attachment. this is without a doubt a whole new level of convenience.  Alternative numbers  Another feature that makes VoIP the choice for many businesses is its ability to allow telecommuting. Users can make use of their office services from anywhere whether locally or internationally. This can happen either online or offline. By removing the barrier of being confined within four walls in order to use your offices telephone system, an organization using IP telephony is certainly more completive.  Say No to Anonymous Callers  Its irritating and time wasting receiving anonymous calls from people who even refuse to identify themselves completely. VoIP allows you to send anonymous calls to voice mail where by the caller will introduce him/her and if it is someone you are interested in speaking to, resume to the call.  Consider the real cost of ownership when making a choice. If you are going for on-premise systems, you should understand that it is going to require a reasonably large upfront investment. If you cannot make such big investment in the beginning, you will be much better off using a hosted PBX system.  Consider the value of specific and bundled functionality before finalizing a decision. It is important to understand that the technical capabilities of both systems are quite the same. The main difference is observed in how these features are bundled. In case of hosted PBX service provider, you will notice that they bundle features and make you pay a set per-user price.  Find out how easy it is to customize your PBX systems. In case you have an on-premise system installed, you will have to spend some extra money to make an IT professional oversee the system's deployment. If you already have a professional working in your company, you may find it easier to have your PBX system customized to suit your need without having to deal with any additional cost.

 Ask them what type of support they are going to offer. When you opt for a cloud service provider, they promise to offer around the clock customer support. You need to ensure that they are offering enough support to help you handle your current and future business needs. You should also be willing to conduct some research to know what others are saying about a particular hosted PBX service provider. They are not all the same, so reading a few reviews may help you shortlist a few good names in the industry.  Know about any on-site equipment you need to get started. Many businesses make this mistake of not checking with the service provider about the equipment they have to install before they start using the PBX service. If you make this mistake, be ready to have a last-minute surprise when some providers make you install session border controllers, specialized servers, and other pricey gears that they may have not talked about on the call. Therefore, it is important to be as specific as possible about your initial conversations. You should ensure that you do not need any specific equipment other than the basics, such as good firewall, switches, and desk phones to handle business communication needs.

 Be sure to get clear information regarding cancellation and contractual fees applicable. The fees may be different for different providers, so you have to pay attention to term details and ensure that you know about any cancellation fees included in the contract. In fact, it is important to ensure that service fees agreement includes whatever you have to pay for domain name registration along with its maintenance. Also know about what you will be refunded if you stop using the service in the future. Getting complete details about service fees will help prevent any misunderstandings later and will also tell you about the professionalism of a service provider.  Check the availability of any trial period. Some service providers offer a trial period to help you have a good idea of what you will be getting when you use their hosted PBX services. You will be better off working with a service provider that offers industry standard trials and allows you to test control panel, service uptime, and live support without having to pay anything in advance. By testing these features, you will be in a much better position to decide if a particular service is going to work for you or not.
