What is Nutrition? The study of Diet and Health What can you tell me about Nutrition?

6 Key Nutrients Carbs Vitamins Fats Minerals Proteins Water Substances in food that your body uses Carbs Fats Proteins Vitamins Minerals Water https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiOBhgxdhYo

What foods are high in carbs? Our bodies main source of energy 60% of our diet What foods are high in carbs?

Carbs Simple Carbs Complex Carbs All of your sugars Quick Energy Burst Sugar Rush/Crash Examples Candy Cake Soda Fruit All of your starches Long-lasting energy Pasta Party Examples Rice Pasta Bread Potatoes

Fats What are some foods that contain a lot of fat? 2nd source of energy Provides insulation Keeps us warm – think polar bear Protects important muscles and bones 30% of our diet What are some foods that contain a lot of fat?

Fats Unsaturated Saturated

Fats

Protein Growth, development and repair of body tissue, especially muscles 10% of our diet Where do we get protein?

Chart Activity Can you name any? Blank piece of paper Make 3 columns Column headings should be “Carbs, Fats, Proteins” List foods that you have had over the last week that fit into these categories. Try to come up with foods that fit under all 3 categories. Can you name any?

Vitamins Helps release energy in food and helps with growth How can we get vitamins?

Vitamins Vitamin A Vitamin B helps with eye sight, especially at night found in carrots Vitamin B Energy vitamin Converts the energy in food to energy your body can use

Vitamins Vitamin C Vitamin D Strengthens immune system Fights off illnesses Found in oranges and citrus fruit Builds strong teeth and bones Helps body use calcium Sunshine vitamin, also found in milk

Minerals Help muscles and nerves work together Found in green leafy vegetables, whole grains Do you know any examples of minerals?

Minerals Calcium Flouride Builds strong teeth and bones Found in milk and dairy products Flouride Strengthens teeth against cavities Found in water, toothpaste (think dentist)

Minerals Iron Sodium Carries oxygen in blood Another name for salt Controls the amount of fluid in the body Increased blood pressure Heart disease

Water Regulates body temperature Carries nutrients though the body 6-8 glasses a day Cools body off by sweating Also found in fruit

Pictionary Activity You will be working with the students at your table (or small groups) When it is your turn, think of a food you have had over the last week. Draw that food. Others have 1 guess to figure out what you are drawing. To get a point, the student must guess the food correctly and then say 1 nutrient that comes from that food. Good Luck!

Food Labels

Food Labels Add all three amounts. Calculating Calories Find “Total Carbohydrates” and multiply the amount by 4 Find “Protein” and multiply the the amount by 4. Find “Total Fat” and multiply the the amount by 9. Add all three amounts.

Food Labels Recap 1 gram of Carbohydrates = 4 calories 1 gram of Protein = 4 calories 1 gram of Fat = 9 calories

Calories Measure of energy in food Everybody needs a different amount Age Gender Level of physical activity 1 lb = 3,500 calories

Calories Trivia How many calories do you think are in a large Big Mac Value Meal? 1400 calories! How does the media play a role in the food that we eat?
