REVIEW

Preaching at Antioch in Pisidia (Acts 13:13-52) Paul and his company arrive in Perga in Pamphylia John departs and returns to Jerusalem When planning to depart for their 2nd missionary journey, Barnabas wants to take John Mark but Paul does not due to John Mark’s decision to leave them in Pamphylia (Acts 15:36-40) Eventually, John Mark becomes Paul’s “fellow laborer” (Philemon 24), a “fellow worker” who was a comfort to Paul (Col. 4:10-11), and “useful in the ministry” (2 Tim. 4:11). Paul and Barnabas go to Antioch in Pisidia

Preaching at Antioch in Pisidia (Acts 13:13-52)

Asia Minor (small or lesser Asia) The area comprising of today’s Turkey was known as “Anatolia” The term “Asia Minor” was coined in 4th century by Christian historian Orosius

Preaching at Antioch in Pisidia (Acts 13:13-52)

Preaching at Antioch in Pisidia (Acts 13:13-52) The go to the synagogue and listen to the Law & Prophets being read. They are then asked if they would like to speak. Paul stands and begins his first documented sermon… He discusses the history of the Jewish people and their dealings with God from the time God brought His children out of Egypt Paul shows that he believes the scriptures Paul reminds them of God’s promise…the raising up of a Savior from David’s seed The promise has been fulfilled. The Messiah was killed by the Jews in Jerusalem yet God raised Him from the dead

Preaching at Antioch in Pisidia (Acts 13:13-52) Paul warns them not to be like their forefathers who did not listen to the prophet Habakkuk “…for I work a work in your days, a work which you will by no means believe, though one were to declare it to you”

Blessing & Conflict at Antioch in Pisidia (Acts 13:42-52) After his sermon, many Jews and proselytes follow Paul and Barnabas. The Gentiles beg for the message to be preached on the next Sabbath On the next Sabbath, almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God The Jews were filled with envy and began contradicting and blaspheming by opposing the things spoken by Paul Paul then states, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; but since you reject it…we turn to the Gentiles” (13:46)

Blessing & Conflict at Antioch in Pisidia (Acts 13:42-52) When the Gentiles hear that salvation has been brought to them, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. Many believed. The word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region The Jews begin to stir up trouble and expelled Paul and Barnabas from their region Paul and Barnabas shake the dust off their feet against them and move to Iconium The disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit

Lessons from Acts 13 When presented with an opportunity to speak about Christ, we need to be ready to do so. (Acts 13:15-16) 1 Peter 3:15 “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear” 2 Timothy 2:24 – “And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient,…” When we hear the word, we need to hear the word. (Acts 13:27; James 1:22)
