Fall Sports Parent Meeting Monday, August 7th at 6 pm 2017-2018 Miles City Unified School District

Tradition

Compete everyday!

Learning Process “It’s not how many times you get bucked off that counts, it’s how many times you saddle back up”

Philosophy “Don’t Whine, Don’t Complain, Don’t Make Excuses” - Coach John Wooden “Always Pick Up Trash” - Coach Don Meyer

“LIFE IS A TEAM SPORT” “DON’T ASPIRE TO BE BEST ON THE TEAM, ASPIRE TO BE THE BEST FOR THE TEAM” “UNDERSTAND YOUR ROLE”

Reputation and Tradition Your success in school will be directly proportional to your efforts. The students of a school are the people who build a school’s reputation – be it good or bad. Remember that tradition is made by you. - CCDHS Student Handbook

Custer County District High School activities department philosophy states that all parties concerned – parents, students, and patrons should realize that academic endeavors have priority over athletics and activities.

Eligibility Quick Check Student must have received a passing grade in at least 5 classes during the last preceding semester in which he/she was in attendance. Incomplete or conditional marks do not count towards 1 of the 5 Students must also be passing 5 classes on a weekly basis. If they do not meet this eligibility, requirement, they will be ineligible the following week and until they are again passing 5 classes. Report is pulled on Mondays by the coaches

Attendance and Activities Any student who is absent or truant, from any class the day of their activity/game, if not excused, may upon review of the administration forfeit his/her eligibility to compete in or perform in that day’s scheduled school activity events. Excused absence: Must be verified by parent/guardian

Travel We expect all students to ride on the bus to and from the activity with the activity group. A medical appointment or extenuating circumstance will be the only reason a student would travel to an activity site on his/her own with his/her parent. Likewise, we expect all students to ride home on the bus. If there is an extenuating circumstance, the student should bring a travel release form (available online) from the parent. They will be allowed to only travel with their parent. THE REQUEST BY THE STUDENT SHALL BE MADE BEFORE LEAVING ON THE TRIP AND SIGNED BY THE ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR. We do not want coaches to make split second decisions on this policy. Travel release form is also available in the main office

“Always pick up trash” – Don Meyer Thank the bus driver! Conduct on the bus… Students will be reminded that they adhere to all rules governing their conduct while riding an activity bus. The time on the bus should be used to prepare for the competition or activity. Opportunity to study and work on homework. “Always pick up trash” – Don Meyer Thank the bus driver!

Activities Dress Code No student will be allowed to participate who dresses or changes his/her appearance in such a way that causes embarrassment to the coach/sponsor of the group, to the school, to the parent, and/or to the community

Training Rules All students involved in activities are expected to follow the drug and alcohol rules twenty-four (24) hours a day, every day, during the entire season of practices and contests. Any student who is involved in an activities program shall refrain from entering any establishment/residence whose primary business/purpose is the sale and/or service of alcoholic beverages or controlled chemicals. The penalties for violations of training rules shall apply.

Training Rules Cont. Zero Tolerance Activities The sports of Football, Cross Country, Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Golf, Volleyball, Wrestling, Boys and Girls Tennis, Speech/Debate, Softball, Cheerleading, Dance Team and Boys and Girls Track will have a zero tolerance policy in effect for drug, alcohol and tobacco violations. As agreed upon by all of the head coaches of these activities, any student in violation of our drug, alcohol, and tobacco policy will be removed from the sport they are in for the remainder of the season.

Honesty is the best policy The corrective actions listed above are accumulated throughout all four years of high school. Any student who has a violation of training rules and voluntarily turns himself-herself in and projects honesty in a discussion of the situation will receive a reduction of seven days (for drug/alcohol) or three days (for tobacco) from the original disciplinary time (for non-zero tolerance activities – Choir, FFA, Art Club, School Play, Key Club). Voluntarily turning oneself in must precede the coach/sponsor/school investigating the student’s involvement. The disciplinary time period may include Saturdays and Sundays of Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter vacation periods which will not count in fulfilling the disciplinary obligation. In the case of protest/appeal, the due process procedure will be followed as outlined in school district policy.

Drug/Alcohol use or possession or association with misconduct (for activities not listed as zero tolerance) 1st Offense - The activities person will be eliminated from all competition, offices and organizations for a period of 3 weeks (21 calendar days) from the time the infraction is confirmed. The person in violation may be allowed to practice during this period of time. Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter vacation days will not count in fulfilling the 21 calendar day obligation. 2nd Offense - The activity person will be eliminated from all activities, competitions, offices and organizations for a period of 90 school days or one semester, whichever is longer. 3rd Offense - The activities participant forfeits all further participation in his/her high school activities career.

Tobacco Use (for activities not listed as zero tolerance) 1st Offense - The activities student will be eliminated from 2 weeks of competition, offices and organizations. The activity student may practice during this period of time. 2nd Offense - The activity student will be eliminated from 4 weeks of activity competition, offices and organizations, but may practice during these four weeks. 3rd Offense - The student will be eliminated from all activities, offices and organizations for 90 school days or one semester, whichever is longer. 4th Offense - The activities participant forfeits all further participation in his/her high school activities career.
